Tonight a buddy asked me to visit his shop and get a "Custom" car he has to run.

He said it's a Pantera, then he added: Dragster project, front engine, 2-4's on a tunnel ram through the hood, automatic, cut-out rear wheel wells. crying

I told him to find the author of this abortion and flog him unto death! All I can figure is that some 'tard cut this up after trashing the transaxle many years ago before they became the high dollar "Icons" they are now. angry

I like a good custom just fine, but this, is just bad beyond belief! I will try to get pics but expect that it's more valuable for remaining body parts than as a viable build project.

Interestingly, the Pantera community is pretty open minded about modifications that will improve or update their cars (there's a big three ring binder from the Pantera club that shows all the mods that owners have done ) but this sounds like it's way over the top.

Something I didn't know about until another board member here posted their project here recently, is there were some replica Panteras built - maybe this is one of them.

Pics require a trip to Monterrey CA, have to wait until after my AZ trip.

One of the scariest hack jobs I've come across was back a couple of years ago when I was looking for a new ride and had a pocketful of cash. I was having a difficult time finding what I wanted which was a slicktop R53 MINI and I was beginning to entertain the idea of alternate choices.

I was hitting the CL heavily and then WHAM! one day I see this thing and it's only 15 minutes away from me!

Incredible excitement!

1972 Opel Ascona A

It had a Manta front clip which from what I've read was a somewhat popular mod, but notice the kinda chesey hood complete with pull handle for opening? Well, that's just the tip of the iceberg.

And you notice the lack of door handles? It had hot-rod style lock poppers.

I still liked it though! LOL

Test drive was very scary because it was super squirrely loose as a goose and none of the instrumentation worked.

Thought hey whatever so it needs a little work to get it properly sorted and actually made a serious offer on it but the lowest the guy would take was $3,500 which I wouldn't do.

Wonder if anyone ever did buy it?

I actually found a build thread for that car and joined an Opel forum!

It was clearly a budget-minded junkyard dawg project and I don't blame the builder at all for having cheap fun with it although I did find some of his choices questionable. It was just a oddball crazy thing for him, he had numerous other vintage Opels in his collection which served him better for "proper restoration" purposes. When I saw the car it was being sold by someone who had acquired it from the builders estate who was primarily an American muscle dude but bought the old Opel because it was different and "nobody else at a car show would have one".

Wanna bet is not a Pantera?

Cool, we've got an Opel Manta in the shop for some electrical sorting at the moment.

I'd bet the Pantera is just some lousy kit car.

I'm pretty sure I've actually seen this. It made the rounds on faceballs earlier this week.

Dodi Auto Sales has shown up on a couple episodes of Chasing Classic Cars with Wayne Carini - he's gone there to pick up cars for the Concours d'Lemons.  From the show, it appears they specialize in craptastic cars.  smiley

Well, if you've gone this far, berkeley it, own it. I'd build a NHRA legal frame/cage, build a pump gas mountain motor and aim for 7s.

Oh man I've totally been by that place a couple years ago. Was road tripping the west coast and pulled a hard uturn to poke around there. Guy inside was real nice and told me feel free to look at anything. Tons of cool random cars and a lot of porsche and vw stuff.

I kept checking this thread, hoping for the worst. I was not disappointed.

Actually not as horrible as expected.

Whoever did it still needs to be flogged, but it's not the made a hole in the hood with a dull axe I thought it would be.

Hoping the whole front clip, or even body, comes off so that I may reach parts to make it run more easily. And yah, I will make the brakes work too, and test drive it, once. Wonder if it has a 'Chute on the back? If that "427" is true the engine may be the most valuable component.

I remember that guy.  Seems like he would be a fun guy to know.

But I do Like the Dart behind it.

Rear chute confirmed. Body tub is steel, it is not a kit car.

Since it's not the total hack I expected it's probably well over challenge budget. wink

Considering the frame is a birdcage, I hope this one was rusted beyond repair and this was the only alternative.

Oh man, I drive by Dodi's all the time when I'm in the area for Laguna Seca. Never stopped in.

I don't see why we need to flog anyone. Just think about what people do to cars for the Challenge. Purists are not interesting people.

So it's a Pantera "Funny Car" type build, and yours for only $29K!

Found out it was not just shoved into a corner after the last race, actually put away properly with fuel drained, headers capped, etc.

I'm curious to see just how well done the chassis and drivetrain are, still feel they could have used something else for the shell.

There was a time in the mid to late eighties when the Pro-Street movement devolved into what weird car can we tub? This is living proof.

I've seen a number of cars at Dodi's that were worthy of consideration. He doesn't price them to the sky, so that it's actually a decent place to pick up projects. As far as the Pantera goes, it is what it is. How many Jaguar owners saw their precious steeds ripped open for SBCs?
