The bumpers were set up to come off easily. He probably just wanted to see if he could make it up that access road without having to remove them.. save some time and effort..

I have the impression that he's a wannabe drifter who think's his car looks cool like that, and that it impresses chicks too (chicks are, after all, especially impressed when bumpers fall off 
). Hence the "drift" description in my original post.
