I am running a 9 speed Shimano road derailleur w/9 speed 11-34 cassette and 10 speed Gevenalle shifters. I am looking to potentially upgrade to 10 speed cassette. I've read to get capacity to run larger cassette that I would need a Shimano 9 speed mtb derailleur. Is it possible to run a 10 speed cassette (same 11-34 but 10 speed and gaining extra gear) on current 9 speed road derailleur without swapping parts?

depends on which shimano derailleur  you have but if your already running 10 speed shifters on a 9 speed cassette and its working fine then yes you can run a 10 speed cassette with your derailleur. I work at a bike shop and Im always mixing parts (for my own builds) and 9 times out of 10 it works even if the internet says it doesn't.

Are the Gevenalle shifters set up as friction shift or indexed?

You can make almost anything work 'well enough.' I ran Campagnolo shifters and deraileurs for years with Shimano cassettes using a cable adapter. It worked perfectly in 9 of 10 gears but one was always balky. You could tune it to choose if it was the high gear or the low one, so I made it the hard one and shifted the front earlier.

It is a Tiagra medium cage derailleur. Its the stock one that came w/the bike..

Also, I run the shifters in index mode. I've run them in friction a couple times but prefer the feel in index mode.

What are you using for a crank? Number of chainrings and range of those rings affects the rear derailleur’s ability to shift the entire cassette due to changes in chain tension...

Oh yeah, I’m a bike mechanic at a local independent bike shop...

Stock compact 50/34 double that the bike came with is what I'm using.

I have found a new rear derailleur for a good price that will handle 36 teeth. Is it worth swapping a derailleur to get two more teeth?

In my opinion...  no way!

Also a "past" mechanic at an independent bike shop.

Meh. Just go to 1x and be done with it.

I picked up a Warbird with 1x11 , and I’ll never go back to a front derailleur ever.

My next bike will be a 1x. What cassette are you running on the Warbird?

In reply to dxman92 :

I have a 42t chainring up front, and my cassette is 11-42. My other bike is a 30x18 .
