So my bride and I are kicking around the idea of a new vehicle. She has heard *somewhere* that the electric-only range on the new Highlander is over 100 miles. I have looked everywhere I can think of and have found no evidence to support that.
Is my Google-fu failing me or is the 100 mile range just a nasty rumor?
Plug in Hybrid is a term which means a car that can run on Electric only and then run on Gas afterwards. In Toyota-speak cars like this are labeled "Prime"
There is a Prius Prime (and a non-prime, standard Prius.) There is also a Rav4 Prime (as well as a Rav4 Hybrid and a Rav4 gas)
The Rav4 is smaller than the Highlander but is a SUV. The EV only range for a Rav4 Prime is 42 miles.
To the best of my knowledge, there is no Highlander Prime but there is a Highlander Hybrid.
A Rav4 Prime video review
Be aware that this Rav4 Prime is Toyota's current hottest seller and demand exceeds supply...so you know what that means...

The Highlander Hybrid is a standard hybrid. It will do electric only propulsion at low speeds for short distances, but that's it. There's not enough battery capacity to allow for more distance in EV mode.
There is no Plug In Hybrid that I'm aware of with a 100 mile EV range.
In reply to John Welsh :
Toyota has never needed to make a model called the Optimus more than right now.
Kia might object, sadly.

And there is really no need to have an EV range above 50 miles at the high end for a PHEV. Why waste all that money and weight on batteries that you'll almost never use if you're already throwing in an almost never used ICE on top of it.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the info
I have another thread on it - my lovely wife is greatly enjoying her Wrangler Rubicon 4xe. The 25ish mile range in town on battery is just what she needs and I believe its the only convertible plug in hybrid with 4WD and a proper low range transfer case.
Its very satisfying to get in it about once a week and never see the gas gauge go down from the last time we took it out of town.
