Vocals might throw you for a loop, but stick around for the sick riffs. The last two albums: the one I shared called Voices of the Kronian Moon and the newest one Cult of the Serpent Sun are 10/10 for me.

This could be one of my new favorite quotes:

"they sound like what the band Ghost looks like".

I've never thought Ghost sounded the way their look implied they would.

Seriously though, listen to this:

Then picture the ghouls in Ghost. When I saw them back around 2011, I expected them to sound like this! Instead, they are essentially an occult AOR band, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Not only do I agree with you, but now you've put these guys on my radar!  I would love to see this band at the Palladium!

I might have posted about these guys before, but this is another one of those "New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal" bands that is absolutely outstanding: Sumerlands.

If you liked the Jake E. Lee era of Ozzy's solo career, you will LOVE these guys. Again, top notch riffage here. They have two albums, both of which are great, but their second one (shared above) is elevated due to the addition of singer Brendan Radigan. This guy's been in a bunch of bands, and he's a local legend. I saw this guy play in a tiny burrito joint nearby that does shows with one of his other bands (Magic Circle, also incredible!) and he was unreal. This is a modern classic if you ask me.

As someone once told me, a little Ghost goes a long way.

I've been on a Beast in Black kick here lately. They don't have a ton of material out, but what they do have is really damn good.

They are Finnish (Because of course they are), and Yannis Papadopoulos (Lead vocalist) has some crazy vocal skills.

Ever buy car parts off a random dude and discover a new-to-you Metal band? Well, that happened to me back around 2006. I bought a set of wheels off a guy for my old WRX, and he had them in his basement shop. I walk in, and I hear the sweet, sweet sound of Scandinavian Melodeath. And we got to talking... over an hour later, I left with my wheels, a set of new Motegi tuner lugs, and a list of Metal bands to check out, top of which was Scar Symmetry.

If you like Melodeath, this is a CLASSIC. This band's first few albums are really great, but this one stands out for me as my favorite. This one leans into the technology, science, and war themes; heavy sci-fi influences on this record. If you like that sort of thing, check it out.

On the lighter side of things, one of my favorite German metal bands covered "Gangnam Style", with their typical not-too-serious shenanigans.

Yeah, these guys rule. Their new album is sitting on top of my Album of the Year list and it's going to take something incredible to knock it off the top of the mountain.

Another album I've been listening to a ton since it dropped is Saddiction by Hangman's Chair. These guys have been around for a bit, and their organic growth from a solid French Death/Doom band to what they are now is really something. I LOVE when bands grow organically to create their own sound. They are bleak, introspective, and heavy, all while staying melancholic and melodic. It's really unique and highly recommended if you are looking for something a little different. It's strangely relaxing and perfect for the hellscape that is 2025.

I like metal. Really a lot. Hatebreed is my favorite metal act. Hatebreed, Gideon, Slipknot, Dagoba, Fear Factory, Paleface Swiss, Kublai Khan TX -- yes, please. Bring it on. I love the controlled violence of good metal. (I also love kittens.)

I do not like death metal. Except.

Except.

I hate to admit it, but Lorna Shore is winning me over. Specifically, The Pain Remains trilogy is good. It's not just good, it's excellent. The musicianship is phenomenal; Austin Archey on drums is a little unbelievable, and when you see him play he looks like's taken a handful of weed gummies and is just sitting down to relax, but he absolutely destroys the drums. Yes, the trilogy is long: It's a 20-minute deathcore epic. But it's SO GOOD.

I'm a fan of some death metal....I have a signed Cannibal Corpse drum head hanging in my home bar (awesome concert to see when you're 15!). Over the last few years I've seen Knocked Loose open for Gojira, and Lorna Shore when they were on tour with Mastodon and Gojira a couple of years ago.

Like the music for both, but the screeching/emo style screams kill it for me. Give me guys like Chris Barnes, George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher, David Vincent, Chunk Schuldiner, Trevor Strnad (before he left this mortal coil), Glen Benton, Joe Duplantier, etc. Also Jens Kidman, but Meshhugah isn't death metal but he still growls like crazy even at almost 60 years old.

Sounds like we have similar tastes! I'm a big CC fan, every album since "Kill" has been a masterpiece.

After a 4 year break I recently got back into writing and recording music. One of the first things I did was an early Cannibal Corpse-style EP. Check it out, it's free. I have some other crap on that bandcamp page you might enjoy as well, and I'm getting ready to release a modern cannibal corpse-style EP once I finish the vocals.

Nice! I got in "trouble" in 9th grade for wearing my CC "The Bleeding" T-shirt to school. Not really in trouble, but the principal beckoned me in the hallway in front of the office and was like "Hey come chat with me for a minute." He was like I know you aren't causing any trouble or anything, but would you mind not wearing stuff that graphic to school? I think that would have been 96-97? So when I still had long hair, chain wallet, VANS, and cordoruy pants from the thrift store. Hahaha

Hahah. Yeah, I can't imagine ANY CC t-shirts going over well in high school. Great band, though.

Currently listening to Conan as I work on my current book. They tune down to F, which is insane but gives an awesome sound.
