The ABS dog "pumped" his paws, while the NON-ABS dog just slid across the sand.

On loose surfaces (sand, deep mud or wet snow) locking the wheels (paws?) helps to dig in and build a virtual wheel chock in front of the tires, helping to stop more quickly.
