I'm looking for bow info and figured I'd ask the hive.

I'm currently shooting a Hoyt Avenger that was given to me. I did go to a bow shop and have it fit to my draw length, and then I have just shot it occasionally in the backyard.

Past few weeks I have really gotten into it, and have the opportunity to hunt in SC, TN, and possibly WI this year. Bow season is waaaay longer than rifle in all 3 states so to increase my chances, my bow shooting his increased. I'm putting 40-50 arrows down range just about every evening.

But like all things...I've started looking at bows. There are tons. From what I gather the big thing know is IBO speed. Anything north of 300 is considered good. With 350+ exceptional. I get that, but how does it figure in when you only have a 28" draw length? I can't possibly be getting the same IBO as a guy with a 32-33" draw length.

Also brands, Hoyt, Mathews, PSE, Elite, Fred Bear are the ones I have been looking at because they are the ones I know. I know PSE and Bear used to be considered the cheaper makes, is that still the case? Or are all things about equal?

Carbon? Any major benefits? Besides costing extra $$$

Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it, practice, consistency, and accuracy are all more important than speed.

I don't really hunt with it, but I shoot a 60lb long bow. Sometimes the old ways are better.

I had a 90# Fred Bear compound, I used to use a lot because I could shoot it in the back yard. I loved that thing. Then in the dark of night, one of the limbs exploded. I thought the world ended.

I haven't replaced it yet, but I do look at them longingly from time to time.

I hunt elk / Deer with a Barnett Vortex. Yup 100 Walmart special. Sure its crap of you believe everything you read on the internet. My view is it's taken 2 cows and a doe. Its accurate to 60 yards and that's as far as I want to shoot. An its better then my 30 year old Hoyt Newton that took more deer then I can count. Speed Means absolutely nothing. I put no faith in it what so ever. I just switched to carbon arrows from aluminum 2 years ago so what do I know anyway. Go shoot your bow and turn off the internet I don't think there are cave drawings anywhere from Indians worrying about FPS. Put it in the 10 ring at 50 yards and don't worry about it. I also use 100 grain muzzy's so I'm just all Backasswords from the conventional wisdom of the internet experts.
