Guys!  You are NOT answering the OP's question. They are not asking about invisible fences for pets, they are asking about fences for invisible pets.  (read the title people!)

I have no first hand experience, but I agree that keeping any invisible pet properly secured would be important.  I like using a split-rail fence for esthetics, backed by a fine-mesh black fence.

I had an imaginary friend chained up in the basement does that count?

I finally put in our electric fence yesterday, here are some tips for anyone else who's taking this on:

  • Buy more wire than you think you need (we ordered 1,000' of 14 gauge wire from Amazon and used it all)
  • The edger was awesome (Thanks, Woody!)
  • Woody's tip that the edger was easier to use in reverse was a great one - it did a better job of clearing the dirt out of the hole when walking backwards with it
  • Try to use the edger when it's dry (slogging through the mud was not fun!)
  • I followed up the work with an edger with an ice chopper tool and used it to open the trench a bit more
  • Wet ground from rain the day before made the dirt much easier to work with when we were laying the wire and closing up the trench
  • Chucking the two wires in a cordless drill worked great for twisting the wire (I used a spring clamp on the other end)
