I have turned into a slug after I got out of the military last year. I have gained over 30 pounds and I'm starting to have back problems. I know it is due to the weight gain. I jumped on the scale yesterday. 212lbs sad. This is the most I have ever weighed.

I used to run 2-3 miles per day with an 8 mile run every Friday. Weight training and CrossFit mixed in every week as well. I was at 175lbs.

I hurt my right knee in 2010 and now have osteoarthritis in that knee. It sucks. Gaining all that weight has not done my knee any favors.

I have a bad habit of over doing it when I first start out. I get hurt, then I get discouraged.

My goal: to get down to 180lbs and be healthier.

I had just walked out of the WTC on 9/11 and saw the first plane hit from the street.  Had I had the ability to clear the physical (I have Crohn's disease), I would have enlisted.  I found this event through a friend, and I'm honored to show my appreciation to those who gave their lives to protect our country.

I ran 5 of the 8 five-mile laps last year, and am hoping to match that this year. My left knee has been acting up a bit so I've taken the past two weeks off, but I'm hoping to get some training in again this coming week.

I bicycled regularly for 25 years before I started running at 45 years old.  i think the cycling really helped smooth out my knees and strengthen all the stabilizing / connective tissues.  Do you cycle?

I haven't in years, but that's a great idea for rehab! I think it was a combination of running, pick-up basketball, and stepping in the hole our dog dug in the front yard that did me in.

Thanks for the tip, I've been going nuts not having an exercise outlet over the past two weeks!

I would like to work my way up to a 100 mile ride by spring. It's really just a personal goal but it gives me a reason to keep working out/get healthy. Hopefully going to do a 25 miler in the fall. Currently jogging/weight lifting tues-weds-thurs, and cycling sat/sun. As fall gets closer that will lean towards more cycling but right now it's just to damn hot when I get off work, and I refuse to wake up any earlier than I already do.

Literally could have typed this almost word for word. Only difference is no knee injury and I got out 6 years ago not 1. Everything else is pretty spot on. Just gotta take it slow and stick with it

I have several friends who have completed half and full Ironman triathlons.  They keep encouraging me to do it, and I keep telling them to get berkeleyed.  I can swim about 100m and I've never been that far from shore so I'm good.  I'm using my Boston goal as an excuse to not swim.

Take it slow and listen to the feedback from your muscles and joints.  And don't be afraid to revise your goals.  Unrealistic goals are a big reason some people quit.

when I started running in Dec 2012, I ran one mile, slow enough that I could nose-breathe the whole time. i could have gone farther, and I could have gone faster, but imposing these limits kept me from getting injured or discouraged.

Ran for the first time since March this past weekend.  Dang, I hurt a lot.  But it's a re-start, which is good.

We've both had some running stopping injuries in the past few years, and we've really let ourselves go by not running.  Kinda sucks.

We don't do it for racing anymore- but for our health and to be tourists.

Race day is October 28th.  7 weeks out.  Tomorrow morning I'm going to run back and forth over my local hill.  It's pretty flat where I live.  :-(

My doc wants me to get my A1C down another four or five tenths...  Gonna have to start doing something.  Prolly start walking and hopefully get back to shuffling down the street, setting off seismic sensors in Tokyo...

Is bicycling an option for you?  There's a real sense of accomplishment, for me at least, when I can cover ground, self-propelled, at >10mph.

I spend less than 5 minutes a day. 50 push-ups every other day and 50 squats on the opposite days. I've been doing that since January. Sometimes I have the kids (2 and 3) sit on my back for push-ups or hold them and toss them for squats (they LOVE "kid squats").

The difference is incredible, and my consecutive pushup ability went from like 30ish to about 60ish now. I haven't done pull ups all year, but I can normally do 6-7. Yesterday at the park with the kids I busted out 10 no problem.

I did 65 pushups in a row just a few days ago. And 58 of them were in the first 60 seconds!

(I love to hit go on the microwave and then "race" it)

Bonus with pushups is you also get credit for the plank.

Great to see how everyone's doing.  Right now I'm rehabbing from knee surgery because of a torn meniscus, so it's PT in the office 2X a week and exercises at home 3X a week.  Progress is slow, but happening.  Can't wait to get back on the road, but it'll be a few months still.
