I grew up on SW Ohio (Eaton), and we had three-wheelers (I'm that old, dammit). We had 350 acres on our farm, and good neighbors who didn't mind as long as we respected their property. We never got in trouble for riding on the township or county roads, or the low-traffic state route, but we never pushed the issue by riding mainly in the side ditches whenever possible.

I don't think you could go wrong with a Honda quad, whatever size you feel is best for you. Buy used first, so you can resell if it doesn't appeal to you.

Don't ride up and down your street if you live in a residential area (that is very annoying to everybody except the rider).

In Indiana, there's an off-road 4WD/ATV park that is very popular (Haspin Acres). If you don't have a great place to ride, like I did, save your ride time for when you're at a similar place.
