A buddy is a retired cop.  Years ago he said he believes the reason so many people run from the cops is because they took the shotguns away from them. "Stop or I'll shoot" is not nearly as intimidating as the sound of a shotgun being racked. Bring back the shotgun and the dogs, and it will diffuse a lot of the situations with no one being hurt.  It sounded logical to me.

I bring it up as a vote for shotgun over handgun.

Is his middle name Levi

Search on FB with the long version of his first name as first name and then for his last name on FB he uses both his middle name and last name to make up one last name.   Lots of pics.  The selfie pics seem to be taken in a yellow semi truck cab.  Would that be right?

To answer your first question, zip ties work. You also need hours and hours of training, so start now.  Also be careful taking advice from police, much of it is not good. You want advice from lawyers, and concealed carry instructors.  You can also get insurance, so that in the event you need legal help the costs are covered.

Came here to say this. IMO your less than lethal options all have downsides. And I can't think of having a better reason to sign up for krav maga and or self defense classes.

This isn't necessarily a complete defense.  Cops don't know the law and are not expected to know the law (again, I think there is a SCOTUS ruling stating this.)

It iss a decent start to a defense, but maybe not all you want to do

DO NOT take legal advice from police.

DO take legal advice from an attorney with experience in cases of your specific kind.

This. And spend the money for the best lawyer in your specific area of need. Just because police "enforce" laws doesn't mean they understand them.

Not like courts are any better. Judges are just as berkeleying stupid and biased as normal people, they just have control over other people's lives.

Pretending they're special, just, fair, or law abiding is setting yourself up for problems. I will never involve the police with anything ever again after a judge refused to even hear the case presented to him, taking the drug addicted alcoholic with a history of violence against women's word over his most recent victim or the county agencies that pushed for the charges in the first place, and I didn't even want to involve them because I figured this would happen. Now we're stuck just living with the repercussions from his actions.

Online harassment is pretty difficult. There are plenty of people out there who will take trolling to a whole new level of ashole, but would never engage in person. They are smart enough to know the legal consequences of engaging with their target, but know they can do so from behind a keyboard.

Unfortunately, this often leads to the victim just closing themselves off from the internet. My company even brought charges against an individual who was threatening our employees via email, so sometimes the troll will even start harassing people at work. This is especially common for elected officials.

Is it possible for you and your wife to "go dark" on the internet for awhile?

I am surprised the restraining order can't be re activated (or whatever) based on the fact he has not stopped.

If he is in fact married, how do you explain a RO to your wife?

I'm really sorry you are going through this.

Don't expect the police or the courts to help you prevent anything thing in ANY way at all. They CAN'T. It's not their job. Their job is responding after a crime has been committed.

My daughter has been dealing with a stalker for over 7 years. We have documented over 10,000 threats- most of them horrible and lethal. Threats have extended to every member of my family, including my grandchild. Been to court in 11 different jurisdictions, and 3 countries. We KNOW who it is, and can prove it. NOTHING has stopped the threats, including several restraining orders.

It's truly shocking how little they can do to prevent a crime.

Follow other advice here, but assume YOU are the final line of defense and LEO can't help.  Because they can't.

I'd be tempted to get in touch with his wife, find out how much she knows about what's going on. A good sit-down with her might apply some pressure for him to behave.

Based on some of the dumb E36 M3 comments I've heard out of SWMBO's sister and ex-BIL (both state troopers) on this very subject, which were thoroughly disproven in about 30s of Googling, I wouldn't put much stock in the advice a cop has to offer. Consult a lawyer.

Regarding martial arts/self defense training, (disclaimer: I'm FAR from an expert on the subject) that's probably a good idea, but I'd be conscientious of the fact that this is not an immediate solution, and it is going to take a really long time to build proficiency.  Remember reading somewhere recently that, statistically speaking, taking a self defense class or two actually has a net negative impact on your safety due to the false sense of confidence it instills and the greater willingness to engage with an attacker versus trying to escape. Essentially the Dunning-Kruger effect.  Especially so for a woman, who is often going to be at a significant physical disadvantage compared to a male assailant.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet - what about a dog? Doesn't need to be some vicious junkyard Doberman either, my Aussie/Lab mix is a sweetheart (for the most part...) but I definitely wouldn't want to be an intruder on his watch either. I'm sure our poor UPS and Fed Ex drivers will attest to that. Should provide a nice deterrent effect as well.

Many years ago I pondered potential "less that lethal" or "debilitating" tools.  I wondered why you couldn't use a strobing flashlight of 80+ lumens in conjunction with a "screamer" of about 125+ decibels to try to distract/repel a potential assailant.  Short version is to make the environment so unpleasant you might dissuade someone.  I'd have a taser/firearm as a backup, though.

Could also end his marriage and put him into an angry, "What have I got to lose" mindset.

Seems like a gamble without knowing more about the situation

This is the best advice I can give. Police can't stop crime from happening, they can only arrest the perpetrator. Living a rural existance most of my life I have always known the cops would be the ones to right the report after it was over. Response time is 10-15 minutes if there's someone "close" and in a life/death situation whatever was going to happen has before they can get there.

Police, in general, do not know the law. Neither do judges and prosecutors. I have my doubts about lawyers. The law is simply too much for anyone to know and often contradictory. You just need a lawyer that's better at telling a story than the prosecutor is so he can convince 12 people, who also don't know E36 M3 about the law, to let you go.

The OP mentioned he wasn't ready for a dog.

recent trials have shown this to be the case lately.

For actual home defense, since I am the one in charge, involves a pre-alarm (large dog barking) to arouse me from sleep or as an early warning system as they can hear better than us. In bed that leads to a flashlight and large caliber handgun if time is short. If not, there's a mossy 500 ready to roll a few steps away. My personal feeling is that if someone is still intent on entering my domicile while hearing a 70-80lb german shephard barking her head off at the location you're trying to enter(window, door whatever) they are definitely not here to be my friend and bring me snacks.

Handgun vs rifle/shotgun for self defense argument. The rifle/shotgun will always be more effective against a human target than a handgun. Pistols are a compromise in every sense. Less power, harder to aim if you're unexperienced, shorter range (but in a SD situation that should not be a factor) etc. Winter with multiple layers makes the difference even more evident as you ay not get enough penetration to do what it needs to do. As far as the myth that shotguns can't miss, it's not true. At 15 yds, my shortened modified choke 12ga has a pattern about 6-9" across with bird shot and about 5-7 with 00 buck. At 5 yards it's less than half that.

I have his number, is there a trolling community that I can post it to along with how he acts to blow his phone up with a bunch of crazy talk and threats about 1000 times/day from 400 different numbers.
