Why do people hate on this, but these are OK?

Because no one - and I mean NO ONE - is going to drive an Evoque like a Rangie / Landie is meant to be driven. With the possible exception of James May, and that was for television.

If you want a smallish 4-seater convertible, get a real smallish 4-seater convertible, instead of one that's inexplicably wrapped in a layer of giant, inefficient SUV shell that's never going to be used as an SUV.

To put it another way, the Evoque is hated for the same reason these monstrosities are:

Ah, from that angle it appeared to be a pickup and I couldn't place it. Thanks!

This reminds me of a 1965 Ferrari 275GTB (sn 07333) that was local to me. It was sold and ended up in Italy for restoration where they discovered endless horrors under loads of bondo.

Here's just one example:

After:

The whole very fascinating, very expensive restoration is HERE at FerrariChat in picture form. On page 42, the guy that frosted the car in bondo back in the 80s fesses up and tells the story of how so much plastic was applied and how none of the world's experts knew. I highly recommend checking it out.

When I knew the car, it sat in the back corner of this garage. It was a little shabby inside, but nothing about it suggested it had such a sordid past.
