This plane is/was formally a rather famous Reno air racing plane know as White Lightning, flown by a former crop duster pilot Lefy Gardner. He was never competitive for an overall win, but was well known for flying very low (former crop duster). He had modified the turbo system for low altitude.
Here is a shot of him rounding pylon 3 (I think, the up on the hill), at what might be called a minimum altitude. The rule is the pilots head needs to pass at the barrel level or above. He would commonly drop much lower when away from the pylons (!).
The plane was heavily damaged from an off field landing as the result of an engine fire. Redbull bought it and rebuilt to what it is today.
