Need some advice on running electric to an air compressor. Due to constraints running electric to my compressor would like some insight on using an extension cord. 6.5 hp 80 gal. compressor 208-230 volts,15 amp motor. Short power cord off of compressor 12-3 type s 600 volt. Plug on cord end has 15 amp 250 volts molded into it. Can get 12-3 25 amp 240 volt 25 ft. or 10-3 30 amp 240 volt 20 ft. cord. I know about power loss over length of cord. 20 ft. barely makes it to compressor,25 ft is ideal length. Will the 12-3 be enough on initial start up or will I need the 30 amp 10-3 for the extra amps on start up? Will there be too much loss thru the plugs?

A #12 cord will work fine at 25'.

That's a big compressor for an extension cord. The 12-3 will work but it would be better to put 25' of wire in conduit, especially at 240 volts. Extension cords are in my mind "temporary" and are always subject to damage.

I don't like using an extension cord on something like this but due to constraints on running permanent wire I have no choice. I don't run my compressor alot. Mostly for airing up tires. Cord will be stored until needed. I appreciate your input. Thanks Wayne

If it's a 15 amp motor, it's not 6.5hp - it's more like 2 or 3hp (air compressors are kind of like car stereos, their advertised power ratings tend to be wildly exaggerated.)  In any case, 12AWG is fine.

I know they exaggerated the horse power back when I bought it. Just wanted to make sure the extension cord could handle the load. I checked the specs on the motor so I could give accurate info. Thanks to everyone who replied, I appreciate it. Wayne

Can you post a picture of the name plate of the motor on the compressor. Something doesn't sound right with the 6.5 hp and 15 amp. I could do the calculation of what is actually needed with that info.
