4 years ago I had to go to Baltimore for 2 weeks of training.  Over the weekend I met my parents at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center and checked out all the awesome flying stuff.  Across one walkway is the Enola Gay.  You can lean out and touch the nose. My dad just started sobbing.  The gravity of what that plane and crew did hit him very squarely in the heart.

Go see the Enola Gay

I felt a duty after the first visit to arrange a school trip.  Hence the second visit.  Being there with students was entirely different, though no less emotional.  I have five years left of my career, and I hope to do one more trip there before I retire.

If you do, and if you come in via Warsaw... Definitely schedule a day to visit the POLIN museum in downtown.  It's worth a whole day, by itself.

Both times we've also been to Warsaw -- it's a fascinating city, and that's another historical place that gave me some emotion.  On my last trip, with students, we were able to arrange to find the remaining section of the ghetto wall and we did a pilgrimage.  It's not easy to find or access, but we did.  One of my staff supervisors, and her son, had family who died in the Warsaw ghetto -- and that was a powerful moment.

My uncle is buried at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI.  I stopped by today on my way through the area.  Beautiful sunny day that hit me hard riding in.  I miss you buddy.  Damn getting me again writing this now.
