Yeah, I found a picture of my Johnson too.. But it is too big to fit on most computer screens. Even if it would fit, I wouldn't post it here.

You do realize that the search for the spark plugs occurred 8 years ago, don't you, Davie?

Going WAAAY back to the original question....

Look into Mercury outboard plugs used in the M70-M85 3-cylinder motors from the late 80s.  They use a short reach, surface gap plug just like the one pictured.  Being a 2-stroke, it might have a bit hotter electrode, but I would venture a guess that in a Wankel, hot isn't the end of the world.

Could you not use a spark plug anti-fouler to step the plug out of the housing and then run a conventional spark plug?

How come no one has used one of these engines to make a rotary Formula  500?

Because class rules only allow certain motors, not a blanket "any snowmobile two stroke" New motors are brought in when parts get difficult for old ones, so allowing this would defeat the purpose.

apparently these have unobtainium 12mm spark plugs which is the issue and I am having issues finding even a spare set. The trick is people when rebuilding these just bore em out to 14mm and run std rx7/rx8 plugs since they are surface gap as well.

I did find someone about 2hrs north of me with 2 of these sleds and a spare engine as good donor vehicles/parts sleds. Not sure with that if I can make the death kart and keep one as an actual sled but we shall see.

I have rally car things and truck stuff to finish first.

In reply to Apexcarver :

It clearly wouldn’t meet class rules, and I wasn’t suggesting it for that purpose.

The question was only to suggest the potential for making a rotary powered F440/F500 chassis.

Reviving this.. Boy what a different world we lived in when it was started.

Im also on the hunt for UP-77V plugs. I inherited my grandfathers 73 RC35 that he bought new. It hasn't run in a couple years and here I am... Same dilemma as the other OMC Rotary owners in regard to the plug...

Very cool sled. I have two '73 rotaries, an evinrude RC35Q "Quiet" and a Johnson Phantom. They were top of the line for the time. The plugs are hard to come by as stated BUT they are also very rugged and don't foul easy. I would just take it out and clean it first.
