I was unfamiliar with Alan Jackson, so I went off on a bit of a research bender on this one the other day trying to figure it out. The lyric is "I lost a universal joint and had to use my finger"  It took me a long time to get it- if it was "I had to use my thumb" I would have understood the allusion to hitch hiking right away. I suppose with a country artist the exact configuration of fingers and thumbs that might be attached to their wrists could be more variable than most.
