I purchased a factory service manual today for a vehicle that isn't even mine.

A coworker of mine has been looking for a 1st gen S-10 pickup as a project. I've been enabling him by sending him trucks from CL and FB Marketplace. Well, on Saturday, I went with him to pick up a pretty straight 1982 S-10 shortbed. Its in pretty good shape with just a tiny amount of rust on the passenger side door. It's a V6 manual Tahoe trim. It has some wiring issues and needs a suspension refresh but its a solid platform to start with.

I found a used, original 1982 Chevy factory service manual on the eBay for a few bucks. I figured since I enabled him to buy a truck, I can enable him to fix it up.

I have found likely the best example of a Z car that I can afford, having dreamed for ~13 years. Previously driven in the southwest, and brought with US Army member to England before returning to Texas, and sitting for the next 15 years. Texas is quite far from Michigan.

I'm considering taking 3 days and some approved amount of "our" money to go get it, even though it does not make things easier and I don't think my wife believes I'm more than half serious.

Relax. You have nothing to worry about.  I'm a professional.

...and I checked the voltage on the bus bar 5 minutes after opening the breaker, and it read 0 volts, so I knew I was okay to continue.

It's not the volts that'll kill you, its the current.  At least that's what they told me in Air Force tech school.

Well...  Voltage shocks, current burns.  3VDC is enough to kill you if applied directly to the heart.  Edison electrocuted an elephant with DC to promote his AC systems as safer, and it wasn't all that much voltage to do it.

I've been shocked by 12VDC before, sweaty hand between a fender and positive battery terminal.  Bzzzz.

I've also had an MSD fire into my right hand and exit my right thigh to the fender, and I was using thickly insulated spark plug wire pliers.  That one hurt.

This one time, we were all drinking pretty heavy and there was an msd box hooked up in marks 68 torino. We bet him $20 he wouldn't take a plug wire and stick it on his tongue with the car running. 

He was drunker than we thought. Probably the only reason it didn't do a bunch of harm. 

Mark was kind of a dick. We didn't feel bad.

But ive gotten bitten by msd sober via my hand. That stuff hurts!

There was a video I watched in automotive mechanic training class in high school in 1978 - 20,000 volts under the hood.  Cheesy.

I've done that twice.  The second time it wasn't my thigh that was closest to the fender.

I think so.  Haven't made it through the whole disc yet.
