My mother and stepfather took a gamble and went on a cruise last week.  Both now have Covid, and are definitely not feeling great.  At least they are up to date on boosters, so it is very unlikely they'll have it bad enough to need to go to the hospital, but I still worry.  Of course, they are also 1000 miles away, so there's pretty much nothing I can do to help.

I just got off the phone with a friend who took a "family cruise" last week (regular cruise just with his family). There were 12 of them. One of them failed the required Covid test the day before so they were at 11 who all passed. By the end of the week 4 more had Covid. He made it sound like someone got it from the guy who tested positive before but they hadn't tested positive yet and that spread to the others. Yikes.

I hope your mom and stepfather feel better soon.

When I was homeless, squatting in the basement at work, I was extremely inconspicuous, like invisible. If the nomads were to simply pick up after themselves, it would reduce the flak thrown at them tenfold.

To place your order I need a few questions answered. Minor things like color, finish, and hand. If you don't answer the questions, I can't place the order.

This makes your order take longer by the exact number of days you fail to respond to my request. If you want me to rush the order, you should probably rush to get me the information I need.

I was being really slick, draining the oil from der Scheißwagen back into the original containers so I can reuse it.  I was holding the drain plug to control the flow and as I went to put it back in when the first jug started to reach its fill the plug dropped into the jug.  So here I am, with my thumb on the hole like a little Dutch boy trying to get the next empty jug by stretching my leg out as far as I could to drag it across the floor to me.

The secondary rant is that the leak in the oil pan cost me 3 quarts of this stupid-expensive 229.51 oil.

Bummer, but I can picture exactly how funny that probably would have looked to an outside observer.  I was never very coordinated, but as I've aged, I'm getting even more klutzy.  As such, I try to look ahead and make sure I'm less likely to put myself in a situation like that.  Hope the oil pan seals up properly this time.

Well. I berkeleyed up at work.

Totally my fault and the boss was rightfully pissed at me.

Now I feel like an shiny happy person and I'm afraid of being fired.

I guess that I'm ranting at myself.

Been there, done that.  If you're generally a good worker, I wouldn't worry too much about getting fired.  Unless the mistake causes an existential threat to the company, boss will get over it.

Well, that's not information I wanted to hear- both because I hope that your mom & stepdad will be alright, but also because my parents and aunt and uncle are leaving in a week or so for an Alaskan cruise. My parents I know have had their vaccines (and I'm guessing boosters too), but I'm not 100% certain on my aunt and uncle (I think so, I think it's only one cousin who didn't want to get one and wasn't planning on it for her kids). Hopefully their experience is better... and hopefully your family gets better soon with no lasting effects!

It probably didn't help that my stepfather is an ardent poker player, so probably spent a bunch of time packed at a table in the ship's casino, and he's not a big fan of wearing a mask.  My advice would be for them to mask up with some N95s as much as possible when on the ship around other people, especially when indoors.

Taking a mini vacation... and the wife is sick.

So now I'm sitting around reading and playing video games at a cabin in the hills instead of doing the exact same thing at home.

I've played that game.  More recently I rolled one of the race cars towards the rear of the trailer by hand and accidentally got it on the sloped part at which point I could no longer stop it from rolling out the door by hand.  I dove into it head first, hit the brake pedal with my hand and got it stopped before it rolled into my wife's car but then I was stuck there.  I was upside down with my right hand on the brake pedal, my left hand trapped under my body which was, in turn pinched under the steering wheel and my legs were sticking out the window.  I was eventually able to free my left hand and get it on the brake and the wiggle my right hand up and put the car in gear.

Red light running is becoming a thing.   As in me seeing several cars running red lights everyday, both ways,  in my 3 mile commute to work.

A week ago I was sitting at a red light and some shiny happy person blew right through the light, right through traffic passing on their green.  Right in from of me the red light runner gets T-Boned.  I don't think the green light person even had time to hit the brakes that is how close SHP was.  Door side Air bags saved SHP from death no doubt since the driver's door was directly struck.

I always look at the stopped traffic to make sure no one  is late running the yellow light past the all red dwell time. This has saved me more than once.

But a person who runs a fully red light, one that has been red for 15 or 20 seconds, is in a class by themselves.   This SHP was going so fast there is no way the green light person could have even anticipated the collision.

Yep, it's starting to be a minor epidemic around here. What's annoying is that one of the worst spots for it is just over the hill from a regular speed trap.  So A) not only do the cops refuse to move 200 yards and stake out the intersection instead, but B) SHPs will floor it to cram through the intersection after the red, but then immediately slam on the brakes to get down to speed before the trap.

If you see something like that please be sure to give your info to the person who you saw have the green light or to the police.  Far too often these cases end up not going the right way as both people say that they had a green light and there is no other source to confirm who is right.

I have never seen our local PD write a speeding ticket except on residential streets and near playgrounds, but they are death on red-light runners. Multiple days a week, all hours of the day and night. Frequently 2 of them working the intersection at a time. They also frequently watch stop signs in the neighborhoods. Zero tolerance. It's kind of nice.

Oh yeah, I called 911 and gave the operator a full description of the SHP car who ran the red light.    Then I drove away.   Last time I stopped to help some head on collision accident victims (hit by a wrong way driver on I-10) the pickup truck that was struck was on fire.  One person trapped behind the driver's side under the steering wheel.   A passing trucker also stopped but forgot he had a DOT mandatory fire extinguisher in the truck cab.   I yelled at him to get it and he put the fire out.  Otherwise the teenage boy driver would have burned to death right in front of us.   Houston PD shows up a few minutes later and cursed us out for hanging around an accident scene (!).  Same thing happened with a roll over accident I witnessed a few months later.  I stop to help, Houston PD shows up and tells all the people that stopped to get the f--k out of here.  So I call in accidents and leave.

Wish they'd do that here. In a neighborhood FULL of kids, if someone slows down at a stopsign, it looks like a mistake.

Well that explains why I've been feeling like E36 M3 sad. GF also tested positive. We both have tests scheduled today. This will be round 2 for both of us.
