Got to meet Wally and Coffee Girl in person.  They are both riots and even though it was only a couple of hours for dinner, the conversation did not disappoint.

Thanks, Wally!

Only downside is a schedule conflict prevented DW from being there too.

We had a lot of fun too, and she was happy to finally meet a friend that wasn't named Chris, she'd met Chris Mahi Mahi over the summer and my best friend Chris in Virginia a few weeks ago.  When we got home I told her I was pretty sure Duke was a nickname and your real name was Chris.

If I ever send you another Hotwheels,  it will definitely come from Chris Johnson.

I still laugh at the inane conversation we had with the waitress about decorative water at the place with the the wood-fired pizza and organic hot dogs.

That, and I remember your crack about "The people in a bar at noon on a Thursday are the real professionals"

Dropkick put on a great show tonight, and despite the clips I've seen on YouTube, Ken kept his political ranting to a minimum. If tickets are available to the theater tour near where you live, GO. just go. And please, try to get a good recording of Barroom Hero.

But tonight came with a bonus win/rant. Going to see Todd Snyder in two weeks, finally. The rant is the fees that came with the ticket doubled the freaking cost and I doubt he'll see any of that money.

Drop kick is one of the shows on my list. I'm close enough to Vegas that just about everyone is available to see at some point. Most of the good ones tend to play on weeknights, but this isn't the rant thread.
Related, I'm not an Elvis fan, but I get a kick every time I see that clip where the reporter was asking him about his views on political protests and wars and all, and he says, "I don't think anyone wants to hear my thoughts, I'm just an entertainer, ma'am." Big wisdom from the King.

My win tonight: in bed before 11, midol killed my headache earlier, and I remembered to charge my AirPods. Other wins: Walking in carrying my 4yo asleep from the van I could see a clear moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. I'll see Mercury when I leave in the morning for work. I don't know why, but seeing our celestial neighbors has a soothing effect, like staring into a fire. Centering.

So Toyman and a few others have posted recently on the trials and tribulations of dealing with Dads that still act like they're 25.   I've got one too, mine is currently 87 and for the most part could pass for my older brother.  He literally can't sit still and still does 95% of the things he's always done.

Still, we're all mortal and it's been an interesting few days here in 11GTCS land.   The good news is that he didn't ignore some warning signs, got checked out, got admitted and got a tune up and new ignition system installed yesterday.   We figured we'd get here (pacemaker) at some point and I can already see a difference.

I picked up my Mom this morning and just got back from dropping them off at home, normal routines are being resumed other than he's uncharacteristically napping now (not much sleep in the hospital with the monitors).  I'm sure my Mom will have to nail one of his feet to the floor tomorrow to keep him from overdoing it.   It'll be an interesting week or two until he's cleared to be back to "normal" activity and I don't envy her.   All in all despite it being an imperfect world, it's a pretty good time to be alive.  (Both my grandfathers have been gone since I was an infant 60 years ago, at least one of them to something that could have been repaired with the medical technology available today.)

GRM related sidebar from a conversation in the recovery room yesterday:  Dad: hey, where's the manual for this thing?  Me: right here, what's the question?  Dad: Is it OK for me to run my chainsaw with this thing?  Me: Calm down there SuperChief.  And yes, small engines are OK as long as they're a foot away from it.    15 minutes later I'm chatting with the surgeon and she's gushing over what great shape he's in, age on the chart can't be right and so on.  I shared the can't sit still part and the chainsaw question and she's like "well there you go!"  She promised to tell him to cool it with the power tools for a month or two.  LOL.

Shoutout to Girthquake: The nurses were AWESOME and kept telling us how great he was.  Get there!

TLDR: Life is good, keep moving and don't be a tough guy and ignore things!

More than a minor win, but we had our 2nd kiddo today - and he and wife are resting/recovering well!

I had one, but now have two.

A few months back I was signing off the apprentices book and noticed a spot for plain and journal bearings. So I tore down an old short block, brought it and my measuring equipment in and had him assemble it. You'll probably never see it in industry, but it's worth knowing.  He started his second year schooling this week, and just messaged me. We're doing journal bearings, I look like a superstar.

I remembered that we had a bunch of mall gift cards and PW has been pushing me to get some new shoes. So off we went to the mall. I found a $130 pair I liked marked down to $80 and pulled my cards out. Buddy says, we can use up the small balances first if you'd like. Ok. So the first two go through, the third does but not on his side. We investigate, the balance came off, but his system didn't see it. We call. The card balance will be reimbursed... in a week. No, that's not acceptable, I did my part, the failure is in your side. Manager please. No problem sir, our mistake, take your shoes and you will probably be reimbursed in a week. Is that ok?  $130 shoes for a little more than $20? Yes, that's ok.

This weekend, I fixed the suspension in the Mazda5, got it washed and waxed, same with the Mercedes.  Got started on patching up the concrete on the patio so it can survive the winter, and ran a bunch of errands.  Took the S10 to its first cruise in, too.  One of the more productive weekends I've had in a while.  Oh yeah, also got around to watching Weird:  The Al Yankovic Story.

Yesterday was actually supposed to be my day to catch up on maintenance tasks on the Matrix so we can sell it when winter hits, but it rained all day, so I messed with the front door instead.  It has been drafty since we bought the place and enough is enough.  First step was to replace the thrashed vinyl gasket on top of the threshold.  Easy enough, and should stop 90% of the leakage.  Except it didn't.  Even with a new seal, there was a solid 1/8" gap between the seal and the bottom of the door.  Ugh.  After lots of research, it looks like the cause is that the house really should have an extra-tall threshold installed.  Bugger.  Not something I want to replace right now, so I cheated and screwed a two-dollar yardstick to the bottom of the door.  It's not perfect, but it's a lot better.  Good enough for this place.  The door should be replaced anyway, and I'll correct it all if/when that happens.

I also peeled all the 3/8" wide foam rubber from the jamb and installed an actual weatherstrip kit. This house is 50+ years old so it didn't have any neat kerfed trim to make this a simple R&R.  Okay, fine.  Spent the $40 on a seal set with aluminum strips that screw to the door opening.  Again, not gonna make the cover of Sunset, but we ain't lifestyle-y people anyway.  It's good enough for who it's for.  It's less ghetto than what was there previously and it is no longer drafty.

Oh, and before the new seal kit went around the door, I reshaped a hinge and relocated the strike plates so that the door actually fits when closed.  It looks a little nicer that way.

And thanks to the time change, I actually got plenty of sleep two nights in a row.  I must be getting old.

The Dancer and I watched it over the weekend as well- and had very different opinions of it- at least in part due to the fact that I went into it knowing that it wasn't a serious biopic and was in fact going to be a parody of his life/other celebrity biopics and she thought it was going to be a 'serious' biopic- though she early on asked if what was in the movie had really happened (believe it was the beatdown of the salesman) and I said, "Oh, hell no." I thought it was hilarious and ridiculous, while she was kind of upset thinking that it was making light of the alcohol and substance problems so many other celebrities have.

i haven't visited my DC-area peoples since picking up Sabine in May of last year.  this weekend i made a banzai run down from MI and:

  • drove some twisty non-Turnpike roads through PA
  • had a nice visit with one sister and BIL and one nephew
  • tailgated with high school bros before football game vs our cross-town rivals.  we won.
  • busted my brother out of his assisted-living place for an evening with a bunch of guys he got his black belt with 30 years ago
  • had a nice visit with another sister and BIL
  • got my first Ledo's Pizza since 2015, and
  • laughed my ass off for 4 hours over said Ledo's Pizza with a couple kids i went to elementary school with
  • had an uneventful drive back to MI, on which Sabine odo hit 97k miles.

overall i'd say this weekend was 10/10 would do again

Just got back from a fairly early morning appointment at the specialist vet an hour away for the first real followup/scan after The Dog's incident at the end of the summer- and it was better news than expected. No sign of the fluid around his heart, mass on his heart wasn't showing up on the scan at all, and kidney functions are all within normal levels- the cardiac vet said the biggest problem was getting a good reading with the ultrasound because normally they're doing them on dogs that are really weak and not trying to move around lick everyone in the face like The Dog was. We've gone from them saying that we should make the most of the time we have because they aren't certain he'd last more than a month or two when we left the specialist the last time to them saying that as long as we kept him on his arrhythmia meds and on the kidney-support diet that he should live to a normal life expectancy for a dog like him (a few more years).

Needless to say, this was a massive weight off The Dancer's shoulders- she's tried to hide it, but I know she's been holding her breath waiting for him to take a turn for the worse and to potentially lose him- she really needed this news. I'm.... a bit more Pollyanna-ish about things, and mostly took how well he's been doing at face value- that he was better and was going to be fine until I had evidence to the contrary.

You'll need to log in to post.
