Not to worry, it is for legit purposes.

We have a DVD camcorder here at work and I want to convert some recorded videos to a different format and smaller size but WMP or WMM won't/can't do this with the original VOB file.

Oh, and FREE would be best but most "free" ones I've found are demo versions that won't convert the whole file - the part I'm most interested in is in the last 50% of the ofiginal file.

You can check out Super c:

It is totally free and very versatile. The website is a bit of a nightmare finding the actual link, but it can be done. One problem with it is it is VERY versatile so you really need to know what you want (there are LOTS of possible settings) and sometimes it will try and convert things that simply don't come out. For straight up stuff (.vod .wma .mov .avi) it should do the job.

Oh, and one big tip. When you drag a video into it double click on the file name. This will bring up a window with all of the current video settings so you can match the frame rate video size etc.

I ended up using a semi-restricted version of Aiseesoft's Total Video Converter to crop the video from ~8mins to 26 sec and convert it to .WMV.

Thanks though! I'll still look into that for future use.

I use VirtualDub but it's not for beginners:

This video converter normally handles any encoding needs I have.

I'm honored, really I am, but come on canoers - this was over 4 years ago.

I'll have to dig up a copy of the vid in question, it was pretty cool for a work related thing.

Here are the videos - blasting limestone out of the way to build a 485,000 SF hospital. The first blast is cool because it goes vertical (no where else to go), the rest of the blasts weren't as exciting as the were designed to blow horizontally into the cleared out space from the earlier blasts.

Wow was the main blast that quiet in real life, or was it too low-pitched for the mic to pick up?

Audio isn't great, it was recorded on a consumer level camcorder circa 2008.

But generally speaking the blasts were not loud but were powerful and certainly could be felt!

Googlez for Handbrake. Get the DVD contents to your hard drive, pick a preset that sounds good, let er rip. I can provide more info if needed but give it a look.
