I'm on the carpet side of that argument. Besides the obvious places like the kitchen and bathrooms, I prefer carpet over anything else. Have had houses with extensive hardwood, and while it looked nice, I didn't care for it. We're going with top carpet padding, but basic builder grade carpet. We've got 3 kids in elementary school, plus a large dog that sheds. When this carpet wears out in 6 or 7 years, we'll replace it with better stuff.
Well, the last new post doesn't show up and I know that this is an ancient thread, but here is my suggestion. Insulate all interior walls with fiberglass batt insulation for cheap sound deadening. It makes all the difference in the world, just pound on your interior wall's drywall and then your exterior drywall.
