I've won a trip to New Orleans for the HBCU Legacy Bowl , Feb. 18-20.  I don't care much for sportsball & may not go to the game.  I'll be in New Orleans Friday, Sat. & Sunday and will extend the stay by a day (on my dime) if the sweepstakes sponser will let me.  I'll be taking my 40 year old son with me.

I'm old enough that I don't want to stay out all night & stay drunk all weekend.  I think I'm most interest in food & music, with maybe a little history thrown in.

There's a lot to do & see in New Orleans. What are y'all suggestions given the limited time?

Thanks

You'll enjoy the French Quarter, just avoid the first 6 or so blocks of Bourbon St. north of Canal, unless you enjoy the smell of human bile & despair.

Decatur street just north of Canal has some pretty amazing antique stores(at least they did pre-Covid). Things like actual suits of armor, etc. However, farther north on Bourbon also has some cool stores too.

It's worth your time to walk through Jackson Square, and honestly there's so much architecture in the whole Quarter to take in. The French Market is across the street too, and Cafe Du Mond is there too - their Beignet's are a common recommendation for tourists, but we're not really fans.

Just keep in mind it is a big city & crime can be a problem. We've not personally experienced or witnessed any problems, but it does happen from time to time.

Regarding food, we have 2 places we really like. Cornet at 700 Bourbon St. has good food & it's nice to sit up on the balcony if the weather is nice & just watch the city & people. The other place is Frankie & Johnny's. It's about a 20-minute drive from the Quarter on 321 Arabella St.

If you have time, or if the weather isn't favorable for walking around, take the street car down through the garden district all the way to the end & back to Canal St. You can also take one to the west end of Canal & walk through one of the historic cemeteries, if that's your thing. We've done both & enjoyed the garden district more.

Let me know if you have any questions, we've not been over much the last 2 years, but we'd usually drive over at least 2-3 times per year.

Thanks John. What a nice way to suggest I use search.  Lots of good info in that link.

I was not suggesting you search.  Rather, I knew I had written a lot in the past and wanted to direct you to it.  Those threads run pretty deep with good info from many.

John,  I was just trying to be funny.  I've seen so many snarky  comments telling posters to use search on other forums.  GRM folk don't do that. Instead they do the helpful sort of thing that you did.  Thanks again.

M2, you must enter every sweepstakes you can find.

This thread is relevant to my interests. Someday DW and I will get there.

I've had to sacrifice watching cute kittens  and porn on line to have time to enter them. I don't enter them all but I do spend about 30 minutes a day entering sweeps.  It's been good to me.

I was there 45 years ago, it was a fun trip.  The things I remember is going to Preservation Hall to hear some traditional jazz, riding the streetcar through the garden district, and hanging around in Jackson Square (look out for pigeons crapping on you.)  A walk through the shady parts of the French Quarter can be entertaining, just to see the seamier side of the world.  I think the WWII museum would be well worth a visit.

Is there like a website with lists or something?

Dude go to the HBCU Legacy Bowl! It isn't just about the sport,  it's an experience. Plus the music will be amazing. I was just in NOLA a few months ago. They're really not enforcing the vaxx card in restaurants. I've gone there a bunch during the pandemic and can't wait to go back.

If you can pass those tickets on to some lucky individuals... devil

Went out walking today & was thinking about how to pass the tickets along.  I may go to the game but doubt it.  I'm waiting to hear more from the sweeps administrators about delivery of tickets etc and I think that if I pass them along, I'll offer them up here first.

Snarky comment: the murder rate there is worse than Chicago's, so don't get shot!

/snarkiness. I've never been there but would have no problem going there and don't think it's a crime ridden anything, and would be aware of my surroundings as I am in any new place.

Have a ton of fun and eat a ton of food. Take a picture with Ignatius J Reilly, and I would also skip the game.

I lived there for a year and I never felt like the crime rate was justified.  I mean, I'm sure that the math and statistics are correct, but that wasn't the feeling I got.

I remember being on Bourbon St. after the Bourbon Bowl.  I just wanted to be a part of it.  The entirety of Bourbon st was shoulder-to-shoulder with rabid foosball fans, half of whom were arrogant in their victory, and the other half pissed off at their defeat.  They were all drunk, many of them stoned, coked up, or otherwise uninhibited.  I read later that there was a guy shot that night, but it wasn't criminal.  Police were responding to a bar fight and one of the guys stabbed a cop and took a run at another cop so they shot him.

Lots of panhandlers parading as street performers (alongside some amazing and legit street performers), so that's where you'll feel criminally attacked.  They have all kinds of ploys to separate you from a dollar.  Pickpockets used to be the thing.  I'm not sure in the digital/credit age if that's much of a thing anymore.  I never worry about my wallet.  If I notice it's missing I just tap a button on my phone and it freezes my cards.  I think pickpocketing has become a lost art.

The people are friendly, the food is great, the scenery is lovely.  I suggest French Quarter during the day.  The Quarter is obviously a drunk-fest at night, but during the day the bars are quiet and suddenly all these neat shops and cafes take over.  it's like when the tides come in and all the barnacles come alive and start feeding. What you thought was just a gray rock is suddenly this beautiful dance of life.  Same with the Quarter.  Hardcore party at night, European-feeling cobblestone street by day.

Take some walking/biking/segue tours early in the trip.  They're a good way to see downtown and learn a lot about what makes NewO tick.  Garden District tours are just gorgeous.  There is a graveyard tour that is very interesting as well.  They not only show you some famous people's graves, but there is a lot of science behind how to bury someone above ground on a sunken delta.

Riverfront is nice.  There is a mall which you can skip, but the courtyard/entrance is neat with lots of performers.  French Market is a must.  It has become a bit touristy (seriously, how many dehydrated alligator heads does a person really need?) but there is a whole section toward the end that is a farm market.  Lots of good food there and it's adjacent to the other must-do... Cafe Du Monde.  A cup of hot and a beignet is hard to beat for breakfast.  Just across the street from the market is the must-do Muffaletta shop, Central Market.

In the other thread linked above there is a great list of restaurants.  Commander's Palace is fantastic, but DO take a jacket and don't take it off.  They will kindly suggest that "you may feel more comfortable if you leave your jacket on, sir."  The old-school fine dining there likes to keep it old school.

I also had a grand time doing Bayou tours.  Really informative, and they are a good way to get up close with something many people have only seen on TV.  If you have a car, there is a great bayou tour up in Slidell called Pearl River Tours.  It's about a 20 minute drive.

I suggest making it a gastronomic experience.  There is a reason I gained 48 lbs during my year there.  The FOOD.

FYI - New Orleans is the only city in SE Louisiana requiring vaccinations or a negative test from the past 72 hours.  I think they have a mask mandate indoors as well.  So... dress appropriately?

There are quite a few parades that weekend. The parades Uptown are the ones to look for if you want to go. But I recommend getting away from Canal street for them.

https://www.mardigrasneworleans.com/parades/

My wife is riding in Cleo on Friday night.

Get a good king cake (Caluda's, Manny Randazzo's, Tastee Donut, Dong Phoung are all awesome).

Vaccinations cards or negative tests are required for bars and restaurants. Bring masks.

Getting around anywhere near the parade routes will be damn near impossible.

Curtis's advice about the French quarter is very good.

Frenchmans street is cool for jazz. There are so many amazing places to eat it almost hard to find somewhere bad to eat. Some favorites of mine, Napoloen House, Port O Call (also amazing drinks), R&Os, Parkway Bakery and Tavern, Camelia Grill, Dat Dog, High Hat, Appolline.

Regarding crime, pickpocketing in the French quarter is a problem still esp at night. The thing with New Orleans is that the bad areas are so close to nicer areas it can very easy to end up somewhere where you don't want to be quickly. Generally uptown is safe and pretty nice.

Same way I feel about Chicago.

In any case, I'm jealous about anyone going to New Orleans. One of the few cities in the US that I really want to go to (most places I want to go to are remote).
