I always hate being the bearer of bad news. Paul Newman, Famous actor, racer, philanthropist, car guy died earlier today due to complications from cancer.

in 1979 he came 2nd overall and 1st in class at the 24 hrs of Le Mans, and in 1995 he assisted in the class win at the 24 hours of Daytona at the ripe old age of 70.

he has also competed in the Baja 1000, and competed again at Daytona in 2004.

partial owner of Newman/Haas/Lanigan racing, owned a Formula Atlantics team, and for a time, a NASCAR operation.

he was 83

It's alright--news of his passing is worthy of a double post. Or several.

I never met the man but several of my road racing friends have. All of them said the same thing about him: a very down to earth and decent man.

I remember that in the late 60s and early 70s Paul Newman was the epitome of cool. To those who were kids around that time, he remained the epitome of cool with a mixture of great acting in super cool films, racing cars, a quiet tabloid free private life, and coming up with plenty of good eats that helped with his philantropy.

Yep, you couldn't get much cooler than Paul Newman.
