This is not a clip video.  It is a story.

A lot of the footage is breathtaking, but 6:37 in particular strikes me as a Neo-grade "Woah"

Group A required a lot of production parts, unlike Group B.

I knew the Group A engines were bridge ports (my engine is essentially those ports in a 13B, thanks to a homologation scan) but I didn't realize that they still used the tiny stock Nikki carburetor!

Video has annoying music in spots but is about the rally overall.  Lots of footage of Quattros, Asconas, Escorts, 037s, Sunbeams, Celicas, Lancers...

Lots and lots of 911s.  But also lots of Delta Integrales, 037s, a Prodrive Legacy that had glowing brakes in broad daylight, a Sierra Sapphire....

This was one of my favorite videos about 20 years ago.

Audis had the howling 5 cylinder Sound.  Lancias had the screaming whine of their gear driven supercharged engines.  Peugeots just had a relentless, unforgiving wall of Sound.  No antilag, nothing fancy, just 1800cc and a giant KKK turbocharger.

Full rally report on the '83 RAC.

10:00... I'd read somewhere that the Group 4 Audis "looked like they hacked at the car with tin snips" but I thought that was an exaggeration!

At 1:40 mark in this 2012 Monte Carlo Rally video shows grip vs. drift. Maybe Solberg's Fiesta had a better setup? I haven't seen anyone use this "simulcam" since this rally.

That was really cool. I wish they would show comparisons like that more often.

It's okay if you just want to skip to roughly 1:02.

Hearing it described as being similar to an old Audi is interesting, because he has a Group 4 Audi.

Very interesting.  The hybrid battery/motor/controller is one self contained box that has its own driveshaft to the rear diff.  Given that WRC has had no center diff for about a decade now, this doesn't mean the motor only powers the rear wheels: it will power the front wheels via the main propshaft.

It can add up to 130hp (bringing max power to a theoretical 530hp) but given that the battery is only good for about 5km or so of transit EV mode, I would think that this is more like a very short acceleration than Tesla-like warpspeed.

In reply to Pete. (l33t FS) :

they are wanting it to be used as a DRS like feature on certain stages, from an older interview about it, so they will have parts of the stage where they can use it like DRS zones. Along with the transit stuff.

In reply to MrChaos :

It looks like they changed that to a system where they can only use it for a performance boost after a certain amount of braking has been done.  I am curious what the exact circumstances are.

From what I understand, you only get one "shot" after the braking conditions had been met, so if you lift throttle after activating it (not certain if manually or automatically) then you don't get to use the rest of the "shot".

This combined with the reduced suspension travel should make things more interesting, the drivers having to drive more like rally drivers than open wheel racers.  I wonder if the official feeds still have the obnoxiously bad commentators that they started to get about 15 years ago...
