That's something that always bothered me about the Cuba missile crisis. The Joint Chiefs of Staff threatened that if any of our aircraft were so much as shot at, that they'd go in an level the place. Of course they would shoot at our aircraft. We were overflying the airspace. LeMay acted like the Cubans weren't allowed to defend their airspace. No wonder we lost a U-2.

And not very taxing of one's BFM skills, but hey, a kill is kill. Only Chuck Yeager could get an air-to-air while flying a Fencer, the most inaccurate NATO code name ever. The Su-24 couldn't couldn't knock down a fly if it ran into it.
2nd pilot survived... said no warnings before they were shot down.... things get interesting

That's one of the big issues with various nations working in the same area. What frequency are they on? I am sure the Turkish were contacting them on a frequency that they thought was appropriate, but who knows what the Russians where using (there hundreds at least).
Did the Russians finally turn on their radios and locating beacons? They had been flying without any signature which was causing a lot of issues with the other nations involved in the actions previously. Regardless this is the third incursion that has been public enough for us to hear about it in the press. So the third time is the charm apparently...
Because if there's a country with the moral authority to get outraged about shooting down aircraft for violating sovereign airspace, it's Russia.
In the broader sense, the Fencer shoot-down and subsequent helo downing serve to reinforce rather effectively the Putin foreign policy narrative to his domestic audience. NATO country taking down the Sukhoi, U.S.-supported rebels popping the helo with a TOW - both of these help to show Russia in the position of victim rather than aggressor, a view already popular with the Russian people, especially when projected through the prism of state-controlled media.
Kruschev I could relate to, Putin is bats hit crazy.
