I know, they're all the best dog ever but this guy really was the best dog I've ever had.

He was 8 and his his health had been dropping off. We had him at the vet several times, he had an infection that was proving hard to get rid of.

He'd been incontinent for about a month and tonight he didn't want to eat, not even to take his meds in cheese which was, apparently, the best thing ever!

His paws were cold and so were his ears. We had a long chat and I took him to the vet. He lost 15 pounds over the last month.

Poor guy was telling me it was time to go.

He was an awesome, loyal, cuddly oaf and he's leaving a great big hole.

Gonna miss him a lot.

Goodbye Gus, good dog.

So sorry for your loss.  It's hard to find a buddy as good as Gus and even harder to lose one.

Oy, after saying goodbye to several dogs over the decades, Rufus; the last one was the hardest, I said no more.  I can't do this.

Then my son called, "You gotta see this dog".  No I don't.  I did.

THIS is our last dog!

My condolences. With 3 of my own and having gone through that myself, just remember...

They're all good boys, there are buckets of tennis balls, frisbees, chewies and endless grass for them to roam where they are now. They'll be waiting for you when it's your turn, asking where you've been.

That being said, if they don't make us better human beings, why does it hurt so much? I think it's because we are more with them than without them.

I think we're on our 8th dog currently. There have been no bad ones, just one really 'trying' one.

We've had two that have been damn near perfect and one that defined devotion but was a little neurotic.

Those special ones...you are lucky to have one in a lifetime. I've had two, both taken far too early in their lives (7 years and 5 years). That to me is what makes it awful; when they don't get to run out the clock like most of their brethren.

Dogs are what people should aspire to be.
