Can you tend bar? Get a gig in a nice place and there's money to be had.

That's what saved my daughter when she got laid off from the printing business. She took a bar tending course a few years ago while on an internship in NYC. It sure has come in handy.

As the OP, I'll chime in. I decided that it did not behoove me to show extra income at this time. I need to be divorced before I should do that. So...I'm just holding off on a second job until that happens AND I get my house livable. If I got a second job, I wouldn't have enough time to work on renovating my house...and that's pretty important right now (for financial AND custody reasons).

I WILL, however, look back at this thread when I am ready for that step.

Wow. An eight year old canoe. Impressive!

Impressive indeed.

And here I am wishing I didn't even have a first job!

No, seriously, though. Much has changed. This is a whole different lifetime so many years later.

Brake jobs.

Don't know about your hood, but around here shops charge about $500 per axle by the time they are done with the fine print. Lots of room for saving people money while making you some.

I also "Hear" that if you are good at tinwork, you can make some good part time change if and when you want to rescue someones restoration effort.

Ummmm...canoe? Maybe? If so, they're getting better at this.

Technical writing can be a good gig. You don't have to be an engineer to do it. A broad background with a bit of knowledge about a lot of things is helpful. It just so happens that this comes with the engineering education!

When people think of technical writing, the most often think user manuals and assembly instructions. That would be one niche. The patent disclosure documents would be another. Because of the insane amount of money that a patent attorney charges to do anything, this would be a good niche to mine for someone who has the aptitude to wade through the minutia of patent application writing. Finding clients is a challenge.

A third niche is writing white papers to push a product.
