I'm looking for a smaller "mechanics tool kit" type tool set, that will be enough tools to use to work on the Miata, while also being in a nice box/case/whatever that is somewhat portable for track days.

I'm planning on either getting a small utility trailer for the car for track days (I'll just drive it to the track on the R888s and Carbotech pads still in), or I'll make my wife or whoever wants a ride that day to drive my truck out as a "support vehicle." A trailer is out of the question at the moment.

Any suggestions?

Also, I'd still like it to be comprehensive enough to replace the mis-match of old junk I snagged from my dad's shed. Mainly old, poor quality tools.

Pittsburgh Pro 301 piece set @ HF right now for $160. Comes with a usable case. Selection seems to be pretty decent. Never seen a basic kit come with a 32mm socket before.

I would add: Vice Grips, a 1/2" breaker bar.

Lifetime warranty.

For reference, i think i paid $100 for my first Crapsman 151 piece set, and it was lacking quite a few things i really needed. I later bought a 309 piece Crapsman set for $180 "on sale" and..... meh.

I like the HF kit except for the pliers, dykes and adjustable wrench.

I got this kit for something like $57 around new years Kobalt Mechanics Set with case

I'd look around. You can usually find one 1xx-Piece Set that is on sale for a greater discount than the others at the usual suspects.

THIS is my favorite set, its blue point, and is rather expensive, but has everything in it for wrenching when out and about. That being said I still haven't bought one for myself, I used to use my boss' while working at a junk yard, just never had the money for myself to buy it.

Though looking around I found THIS as well, from lowes, $199.

Nice start, grab a screwdriver set and some pliers and you're set.

I would think a mix and match set of tools would be my choice. Most of the sets will have a bunch of usless E36 M3 in a crappy case. For instence that BS screwdriver/nutdriver that is in most kits(and it ends up being like 3million of the tools in the 10million peice kit) also you will not need any S.A.E. tools for a mazda (I could be wrong) get a complet set of metric 12point wrenches, a good 3/8 drive rachet, a few 3/8 extensions, a full set of 3/8 6point deep sockets, a set of good screwdrivers, some vice grips brand vice grips, a side cuter, a needle nose pliers, a slip joint pliers, a 1/2 drive braker bar and a 17,19 and 21mm socket in 1/2 drive. just my .02 cents

i picked up a 120-something piece husky starter tool set from Home Depot for $79.95 about a week before XMas.. it has a really good selection of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drive sockets and ratchets and a decent selection of metric and SAE wrenches. and it came in a handy plastic carrying case. they also had a slightly bigger set with more tools for around $100. it was probably a Xmas seasonal thing, tho, so good luck finding it any more..
