Syd was one of my heroes. Even if you didn't know his name, I guarantee you've seen his illustrations and designs. He was an incredibly talented designer, and his influence on Modern and Futurist design cannot be overstated. He could do achingly beautiful or grittily dark visions, but everything in his imagination seemed to make sense and have a purpose.

Thank you, Mr. Mead.

I agree. Every time I think I've seen all of his work another one pops up and I'm down the rabbit hole again.

Just stunning.

When I was a freshman design student I got to see him when he came and gave a presentation on campus.  What a talent.  Like Ralph McQuarrie, he seemed to hold an entire alternative universe in his imagination that he was able to draw from.

I was just about to mention Ralph McQuarrie. Yeah, anyone who can make a garbage truck look badass has great talent.

You can fall down the rabbit hole at his site, too.

He also did a lot of the mechanical design for Turn-A Gundam, which makes him one of very few, if not the only, non-Japanese main mechanical designers for Gundam.
