Making a run up to New England this weekend. I'll be targeting trout and pike. There has been a lot of rain, though.

I'm in PIttsburgh, I work all the time but try to sneak off occasionally to hit up the rivers here in my kayak. I grew up fishing for bass in ponds and carp in rivers, so fishing these larger rivers at around the confluence forming the Ohio is fun- you never know what you'll get.

Anyone else here fish in Pittsburgh?

Close. Fish from the Yough Dam tailraces in Confluence and down river about 15 miles. Mostly trout and occasional catfish or walleye. The scenery around Ohiopyle is almost therapeutic. No boat here or I'd fish Yough Lake.

A nice smallmouth bass from a lake near Lewiston Michigan, caught last saturday, about 3.5-4 pounds caught on a 3 inch sucker minnow, one split shot and a 2/0 circle hook.

I'm jealous. The weather was awful (it SNOWED) when I was up in the Northeast and all of the rivers were nearly flood stage.

I still paid $22 for a three day license and did get three small bass while shore fishing from a lake. No pictures, they were not worth it.

In other news, I sold one of my kayaks (Native Ultimate 12) and got an Old Town Guide 119 canoe. I've only had it on the water once, but it is looking like a solid choice. There are some crazy builds out there for this boat.

I fish once in a while, always wanted to try fly fishing. I always thought tying flies would be a cool hobby whether you fish or not.

This local guy does beautiful work! http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Photo-essay-The-fish-won-t-know-what-hit-them-4493269.php#photo-4585865

Stopped by a place on the way home and spent 15 minutes chucking a spinner. The last cast got me a green sunfish that was just barely big enough to fit a #2 Mepps into his mouth.

914: Those are some crazy flies there.

So here is what I did.

I have a folding, fabric weave net I use in my kayak. It certainly nets fish, but lures get caught in fabric weave nets all of the time. Spending 10 minutes delicately picking a treble hook out of a net really cuts into fishing time.

So I hit it with Plasti-Dip. I used the whole can. I'm not sure how durable it is going to be, but treble hooks don't get caught in it any longer.

Is there a permanent rubber compound that won't peel like Plasti-dip?

If this doesn't work, I guess I'll have to spring for an Ego Net, but they are $$$$.

We have a rubber net, probably from Bass Pro Shops. Probably cost about $40, but I have never caught a hook in it.

The lake was up about 10 feet from all of the rain.

I could have caught all of the bluegill I wanted to, but I stopped after my Mr. Twister was destroyed and went for bass. Got one a hair over 12" on a jointed Rapala in sunken timber.

It was a good shakeout cruise for my new kayak, and it also reminded me I have to touch up the lines on my Hawg Trough before the tournament next month.

Friday next week I hit the salt at Ft. Fisher for some reds, flounder and trout. (read: stingrays, sea robin and lizardfish)

Friday, the 28th of June, I went fishing with 4 others in the Gulf of Mexico off the Venice LA coast. We went out near some oil drilling platforms. On our first drift past the platform 3 of us hooked nice Red Snapper, 12- 15 pounds each. We made several more passes and had our limit of 2 Red Snapper per person. As we unhooked the last snapper a big King Mackeral hit one of the baits. It was a 35- 40 pound fish. We rerigged and began trolling for Kings. We all got a nice mackeral in short order. 2 were slightly smaller, about 20 pounds. We fished a bit more for Cobia but did not hook any. However, I did land a 35-40 pound Amberjack. A line of thunderstorms cut the day short. All in all it was a great day.
