Nope, not gonna get all sappy on you all. Driving in to work this morning, watching many of my fellow Michiganders slide around and, occasionally, "leave the driving surface", I've decided everyone in Michigan who doesn't already have them should be required to get snow tires for Christmas. No, it won't get you on a Zales commercial. No you can't sneak them in your pocket and pop them out at the right point in your magical sleigh ride through the country, or probably even get them under the tree. But let's be honest, what says "I care about you" more: an overpriced conflict stone or improved all weather traction?
Beside, snow tires allow you to drive circles around these two shiny happy people and their new GMC's.
Also: You southerners may move on to the next thread.

Being a hopeless romantic I just put a set of Nokians on The Wife's Jeep.

It sucks the couple of mornings a year that my extreme summer tires get squirrelly in the cold Florida weather.

You should send this to Tire Rack as a marketing campaign. Seriously.

You are not wrong about the snow tires. They would make a lovely gift.
I don't understand your hate for the nice couple with two new GMCs? Who by the way have no snow.
And PS: Floridians don't need snow to be terrible drivers.
Done! ...don't live in Michigan though.
Snow tires are definitely NOT what popped into my head when I read the thread title.

I remember having some skinny snow tires for my 323GTX when I lived in Ohio. 155's IIRC. Trips into Michigan to go skiing while it was snowing were the best. With mortals on the highway following the 2 black ribbons at some reasonable for conditions speed, I figured the fast lane is just to the left of them in the 5" of fresh white stuff. Even the SUV's would give up trying to keep up after a short time figuring it must be Death driving the white car that threw a wake as it went by. The car was like a great white shark; Perfectly adapted to, and in charge of, its environment.
In my wife's case, I saved the snow tires for a Valentine's Day gift rather than Christmas.
I'm just romantic that way.

Uh, the most perfect Christmas gift is this:
Particularly for a white elephant type exchange. You’re welcome.

After the commute I just had, I cannot upvote this enough times.
A freak snow squall blew through and dropped 1-2" of the white stuff, which was just enough to coat the untreated roads and turn into a sheet of ice once driven over a few times. Mass chaos ensued amongst the general public, on their bald ass Walmart no-seasons, and I had to divert to the back way over the mountain when one of them go hopelessly stuck going up a hill and backed up traffic for about a half mile. Had to drive around two other cars stuck on hills and watched someone else very nearly loop an F350 in front of me. Usual 50 min commute turned into about 1:40.
Meanwhile, in my rwd sports car, I'm getting along just fine. Because Blizzaks.
As to the reception you might get from buying tires as a gift, I have this:
I bought some tires for my new girlfriend before she left on a roadtrip to visit her parents. A few years later, she said that was when she knew that I loved her.
We've been married for 24 years, and I'm so happy.

I know! I can't even run slicks when it rains.
The last snow we had, the ATs on the Cherokee worked like a charm. I drove everywhere in that stuff and loved it. They even worked very well when it all turned to ice a couple of days later.
I hope it snows again this year.
