I think I threw it out/sold as scrap.  I also think I know where I can get like a hundred more just like it.

I'm really surprised the truth behind the original picture hasn't come out, yet.

That's almost certainly a heat sink, probably for a LED spotlight.

With all those holes it is part of an assembly.     what assembly I have no idea.   Cooling might be involved

My mom is an author, writing historical (as in historically correct) novels. She knows a small army of seriously knowledgeable and nerdy historians and she used that network to look up the pins/pegs with balls.

Nobody knew. Best guess are still that they are tool for ropes and rigging for boats, but nobody is actually sure.

I’m convinced. It’s a hoax.

Bravo to the creator for having succeeded at one of the best ruses ever.

If it is a hoax, we need PROOF it is a hoax.

Someone brought these to a librarian and wanted to know what they are. The librarians are stumped as am I. Time starts now!

I'm going to look at this another way, from function - I think the "top end" of each is set so it can be rotated by something else - the wood/bamboo one has a slot, the others are square (except the top, with hex) heads. still not sure about the 3rd one down - clearly the 3rd from top and the bottom right would have less strength.

All of them look like a string (or yarn?) could be wrapped around either "handle" and most have a point below the "handles" where something could be wrapped or slide around.

---edit:

the top one is still a square drive. The 2 silver ones in the bottom seem to be round, but may have an internal connection or be threaded?

Tom Waits once cut a hole in the side of a dumpster and ran piano strings across the hole to see what it would sound like.

I bet those are the tuning pegs.
