I did a deep dive on Shipwreck Kelly's yesterday trying to find one in Virginia.  Matchbooks on eBay indicate various locations - Vegas, Chicago, Honolulu, and LA.  I couldn't find one in VA, but I think a gift shop there explains the pirate hats and other novelties, assuming it was a restaurant like Cracker Barrel.

I found the same matchbook info. And, yeah, could explain the rubber chicken, et al.

So, based on the cars, we are guessing mid-70's?  Remember, unlike the movies, most people don't drive around shiny new cars, so most of the cars in the pictures will be at least a few years old (of course, people did not keep cars quite as long back then).

Another possible clue into when these photos were made: the film itself.

Disregard the clear tape, though, as I added that as I didn’t trust the original adhesive used to secure the exposed roll.

Kodak produced this camera from 1957-’64. It used 127 film. By the mid-’70s, though, I want to say that anyone taking holiday snapshots would have moved to a 126 camera as it was easier to load.

Back to the comment about the double exposure: Yes, I can easily see that happening.

This Kodak Brownie Bullet is basically a box camera: shutter, lens, method to hold and advance the film. There’s no mechanism to prevent double (or triple or whatever) exposures. There’s also nothing preventing you from advancing the roll all the way to the end.

What is the order of the exposures on the negatives?  Are the young people pics mixed in with the old people?

The slogan "Virginia is for Lovers" was adopted by VA tourism in 1969 according to Wiki, so the chicken lady (2nd KITH reference) pic couldn't be before '69.  The old people pics can't exist prior to early 70s because of the cars.  So while none of that necessarily correlates to anything, because the shirt could and did exist at the same time as the cars.  It does however not exclude the possibility that the pictures are years apart.  If we also consider that the pictures were taken on nearly obsolete film, a plausible scenario begins to emerge.

Who uses outdated technology?  Old people.  Who likes taking pictures of (grand?) kids being cute?  Old people.  Who takes senior citizen trips requiring name tags?  Old people!  Who is likely to double expose pictures, possibly take years to shoot an entire roll of film, and forget to take that roll out of the camera for processing... OLD PEOPLE!

These pictures were taken by a granny capturing her grandkid(s) at their 1969 Archie McPhee University graduation.  Then several years later while packing for an upcoming Senior Citizens trip, she noticed that her camera still had film in it.   Not realizing she hadn't fully advanced the film, she snapped some photos of her friends on the bus trip to Honolulu, where they ate lunch at Shipwreck Kelly's.  The unseasonably cool spring weather requiring light jackets, plastic rain bonnets, and 1920s flapper-style hats.  Possibly compromised by the vibrant color or geometric dazzle of a friend's green polyester shirt, she forgets to take the film to Rexall's to be developed.  The camera is discovered years later by none other than the Mr. David Satchmo Wallens!

Having solved that mystery, what I want to know now is, what is a healthy Quercus alba doing in Hawaii?

I also expected 5 to have been taken before 4: “Crap, you got in the way. Let me retake the photo.”

I weakly tried to find shipwreck kelly’s earlier, don't think it was LA, Vegas, or Hawaii.  The Shipwreck Kelly’s bar and galley in Illinois at that time but can't find pics to confirm boat was there. The font and that they're wearing a sweater in the picture line up

In reply to johndej :

Still no luck on my end finding that boat, either.

And, to be honest, when I first saw the boat, I figured it would be a slam dunk.
