My Mom's car died and it ended up being the distributor cap but sadly in the process the front clip snapped off. 
 

If I was my car I'd zip tie it, carry extra zip ties and call it a day, but at 72 years young, she ain't doing that.

Or if you have any good more permanent solutions than zip ties, I'm just starting to look into other solutions today.

That's a standard clip on many a VW. They seize into the groove their in and break. Should be able to get the remaining part out. Hit it with pb blaster and work it back and forth. Find a good one at the salvage yard. I may have but am no where near my stuff and won't be for a week.

Im looking into some part outs now for a real cheap one. 
 

There's aftermarket distributors for $75 that list as fitting. Earlier 2.0l aftermarket ones for $40 I could steal clips off of.

I did put zip ties on it today and did a quick test drive. Works good for now. But they've been borrowing one of my cars in the meantime.
