2023 Mecum Indy auction sees over $100 million in sales

$113 million. That’s the total amount of sales achieved at Mecum’s 2023 Indy auction. The amount is also the second-highest total ever reached in Mecum’s nearly 40-year history.

The top 10 sales of the auction included the Plymouth Cuda 440 Rapid Transit Show Car, a rare Chevrolet Corvette ZR2, a Paxton-supercharged Shelby GT350 and the famed “Black Ghost” Dodge Hemi Challenge R/T.

The complete top 10 sales list is as follows:

  1. 1970 Plymouth Cuda 440 Rapid Transit Show Car (Lot F152): $2,200,000
  2. 2020 Ford GT Heritage Edition (Lot S216): $1,375,000
  3. 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T SE ‘The Black Ghost’ (Lot F142): $1,072,500
  4. 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (Lot S118): $770,000
  5. 1971 Chevrolet Corvette Export ZR2 Coupe (Lot S116): $715,000
  6. 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition (Lot S215.1): $660,000
  7. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (Lot S105): $660,000
  8. 1931 Cadillac Series 452 V-16 Convertible Coupe (Lot S225): $660,000
  9. 1967 Shelby GT350 Fastback (Lot S115): $632,500
  10. 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird (Lot S114): $605,000

From the responses I'm seeing from people who are in the know, that Black Ghost Challenger was hyped up way beyond reality.  A stone stock street Hemi wouldn't have stood a chance against the heavily modified cars that existed on Woodward Avenue at the time, and in any case the people who were actually there had never seen the car.
