Amelia Island: Again Celebrating All the Hits

Photography by David S. Wallens and Michele Wallens

Picture the Amelia Island Concours as the automotive equivalent of a “best of” album or TV show. All of the greatest hits. No filler. No lame choices. And John Oates, too.

This year’s concours, held March 8 on the north Florida island, celebrated Roger Penske. Did the field include one of his team’s famed Trans-Am Camaros? How about a bunch of them. And the AMX. And the Can-Am cars, including the all-conquering Porsche 917/10 and 917/30.

But wait, there’s more: When your concours field contains more than one Ferrari GTO, you’re usually doing pretty okay. Amelia had two on display, including Ralph Lauren’s.

Other cars that you usually just don’t get to see included Richard Attwood and Hans Hermann’s Le Mans-winning Porsche 917K; CERV I, the open-wheel, mid-engine Chevy development vehicle; and the very first 1963 Chaparral 2.

Another one that made us smile: Like us, John Oates also has a 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera in the fleet.
