Car Catcher: 2000 Bentley Continental R Mulliner Former Auto Show Car

Paid article presented by Fantasy Junction.

How rare is rare? This 2000 Bentley Continental R Mulliner offered by Fantasy Junction for $89,500 represents one of just seven left-hand-drive examples built for that model year. Bentley constructed just 131 of these wide-body Continental R Mulliners total, so no matter how you slice it, the odds are low of seeing yourself at that next Cars & Coffee or Radwood.

What made the Continental R Mulliner so special? All of it, more or less. “The Continental series was produced from 1991 – 2003 exclusively as a luxury coupe, in both T and R configurations,” the listing states. “It was the first Bentley to not share exterior design with Rolls-Royce models, as had previously been the case since the mid 60s.”

The Continental R Mulliner combined the power of the Continental T with the longer wheelbase of the wider and more luxuriant R. Power comes from a turbocharged 6.7-liter V8: 420 horsepower along with 650 lb.-ft. of torque. Zero to 60 was said to require just 5.6 seconds.

This example was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show and then unveiled in the U.S. at Pebble Beach. It was then shown in Vancouver.

Today this beautifully preserved Bentley remains in excellent driver’s condition, with just over 41,000 miles logged, still showing beautifully warm silver metallic paint with very high gloss over superb bodywork, and very nice panel gaps throughout,” the listing states. “The body colored bumpers show excellent fit, the sculpted rocker panels, and emblems are all in very nice condition with excellent shine and no significant marks or flaws. The front of the car shows only minor evidence of road use while the remaining surfaces are in very good condition. The remaining trim, glass, lighting, and lenses are all in excellent condition as well. The car is outfitted with factory wheels which have been chrome plated under more recent ownership. A clear protective film has also been applied to the front of the car and the forward corners of the front fenders.”

These are magnificent motorcars by every measure: sybaritic luxury, stunning performance, surprising nimbleness, commanding presence...and mass. The elegant proportions belie the sheer size of the beast.

I owned one in Mason's Black many years ago. My only quibble was that triangular filler piece at the base of the C-pillar, to accommodate the rear window lowering sufficiently. It breaks the clean shape there and so I painted mine satin black and that tiny detail "finished" the car.
