“It’s a complete surprise to me,” recalls David Hinton, owner and president of Historic Sportscar Racing.
“The track called me around late August,” he continues. The question from officials at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca: Was HSR interested in becoming the sanctioning body for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and Monterey Pre-Reunion?
“When an offer like that comes along, it would be hard to say no,” Hinton explains. “We feel we can do it and do a good job.”
While HSR’s current calendar concentrates on the East Coast, Hinton is no stranger to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, as he’s a regular entrant and participant.
“The event, to me, is the best vintage race in the country,” he says. “The best cars, best driving standards.”
And he doesn’t foresee a need for it to change much. Perhaps, he notes, HSR’s presence will entice a few more East Coast drivers to make the trip. “They know our system,” he explains.
Run groups should stay largely the same, Hinton continues, and the official list for 2021 is expected to be released in two to three weeks. Car selection will be handled jointly by the track and HSR.
