Jochen Mass, F1, Le Mans Winner, passes away at 78

David S.

Jochen Mass raced at the highest levels: Formula One, Le Mans, Daytona. He passed away on May 4 from complications from a stroke suffered in February. He was 78.

Mass found success in those arenas, too: Winner at the 1978 Spanish Grand Prix for McLaren, pole at Daytona in a Porsche 935 in 1977 and, with 12 appearances at Le Mans, the 1989 win in a Sauber Mercedes C9.

His co-drivers through the years were just as legendary: Hurley Haywood, Jacky Ickx, Bobby Rahal (Sebring winners in 1987), Bob Wollek, Hans-Joachim Stuck.

An HSR video from 2021 shows Mass running the high banks in a Porsche 911 at the Classic 24 hours of Daytona.
