Orange Blossom Tour: First-Class Week Wraps at Amelia Island

Few activities are more relaxing than back roads driving.
The top-notch week ended on a high note with a farewell banquet that saw awards handed out to a great group of participants

The 2016 running of the Classic Motorsports Orange Blossom Tour finished on a high note Thursday, March 10, with a farewell banquet that saw awards handed out to a great group of participants for their skills and fun-loving spirits.

In addition to the informal concours that opens each year’s tour, this most recent Orange Blossom Tour included a short gimmick rally and an old-fashioned gymkhana; both stressed fun over competition. These were woven into four days of scenic touring, first-class dining, historic lodging, and a variety of outings for a mix that earned raves from the participants. Those entrants drove classic and modern sports cars ranging from a 1955 Porsche 356 Continental that went on to win an award at Amelia to a brand-new Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS, but all seemed to find the same good times.

“Enjoyed every minute,” said a couple who brought their immaculate Morgan, while the pair in that new Porsche said the tour, which emphasized teamwork, “made it a pleasure to work as husband and wife.”

Whether it was touring the gilded-age properties at Jekyll Island, enjoying boat tours that cruised for dolphins (and alligators!), shopping the village of Mt. Dora, or listening to special guest speakers Bill Warner (founder of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance) and Hurley Haywood (legendary Porsche racing driver) and viewing the Schmidt family’s extensive private automobile collection, there truly was something for everyone at this year’s Orange Blossom Tour. We’ll be doing it again next year on March 5-9, 2017, and would love to have you join us. Email Rick Goolsby to save your spot.
