Our 15 Favorite Cars From Monterey

Mercedes-Benz showed one of the most famous race cars ever at Pebble Beach: No. 722, the 300SLR driven by Sir Stirling Moss to the 1955 Mille Miglia win.
Before we had One Lap of America, Dan Gurney and Brock Yates co-drove a Kirk F. White Ferrari Daytona coupe to the 1971 Cannonball win.
Oh, Ghia, you so know how to design a pretty car. John L. Huggins showed the 1962 Ghia L6.4 at Concorso Italiano.
Last year Barry Cannally caught our eye at the Quail with his immaculate 1964 Triumph Spitfire. This year he brought it to our welcome party and, yes, you’ll see this one in Classic Motorsports soon enough.
The things you see just parked in plain sight—like this 1948 Tucker outside the Bonhams auction.
Not all Porsche Speedsters are sealed away from the elements, as Tom Gloy regularly drives his.
Before BMW could race their V8-powered E46-chassis M3, they needed to homologate the recipe. For the first time ever, one of the three surviving six visited the States. A Grassroots Motorsports feature is already in the works.
Triple Nickel Racing stole the Concours d’LeMons with their Baja Ford Galaxie.
If Mad Max was more concerned about fuel economy, perhaps he’d drive Ben Brandt’s Altima, another Concours d’LeMons standout.
The Porsche 956 that won the 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans crossed the block at the Gooding sale and sold for a cool $10,120,000.
Think those six-figure Jolley prices are a fluke? Gooding got $660,000 for this 1956 Fiat Eden Roc, one of two built.
By all rights, Dr. Ernie Nagamatsu should have Old Yeller II locked away safe and sound. Instead, he races it at tracks around the world, lets kids sit in it, and happily answers questions.
New Mazda MX-5? How about an LS-powered Lucra LC470 instead.
Not sure we have ever seen this one in the flesh: one of the Mercedes-Benz C111 experimental cars. It greeted guests at the brand’s Friday evening affair.
Saab 900 turbo power helped Scott Graves turned a cast-off Honda N600 into a LeMons racer. Watch Grassroots Motorsports for more.

Monterey can overwhelm the senses—ours are still recovering after a week on the peninsula—but here are 15 cars that left a mark in our memories.

The cool thing about Monterey is that you never have to say, "Whoa, is that a real........?"

Great choices. Glad to see not everything was worth multi-millions.

Kirk F White's Ferrari! He lives right down the road from you guy's office. He tells the great story of how he and Penske got together to sponsor the 512 Ferrari.

Tom Gloy, the former Trans Am driver? Nice Speedster, Tom. So, what kind of collection does he have?

Kirk was a concours judge at the first Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge--back when it was the $1500 Challenge. Yes, he's a super-cool guy.
