Restoration Impossible: Ordering the Final Parts

As we were disassembling our project Lotus Elan, we made a general list of the parts we would need. At this stage of the game, we also completely disassembled all of the suspension pieces to see what we would need.

We realized the front trunnions were like new. Since original parts are often made better than reproductions, we decided to reuse them. Our steering rack was in great shape as well, other than needing new tie rod ends.

We were able to get our calipers apart (with great difficulty). So we’ll order rebuild kits, and not entire calipers.

Thankfully we were missing just one piece on our entire chassis: a common banjo bolt to hold the brake line onto the caliper.

We made a spreadsheet of all of our parts needs and sent it to both R.D. Enterprises and Dave Bean Engineering.

Ray at R.D. got right back to us, had almost every part in stock. Within a week our shop was full of almost very Lotus part we would need to assemble our car.

Dave Bean Engineering was most helpful in recommending parts and provided some hard-to-find parts like the series 1 Lotus Elan deck lid hinges.

Was there any actual liquid brake fluid in those calipers when you cracked them open?

Jerry, I was surprised at how much fluid was still in the system, especially in the brake lines themselves.
