1990 Mazda Mx-5 Miata

Bought to replace prior crushed by fallen tree. Came with blown engine and body work prepped for paint. Installed cheap used 1.6 engine, AC system (from race car scraps) and got a cheap paint job to use as a daily driver for a couple of years. Then proceeded to bring over go fast parts from crushed Miata. This time the FE-3 big block Mazda four cylinder was installed lower and further back which incurred changes to the majority of the swap for fitment. Engine management is a CoolEFI Jaguar A3 ecu/hardware running FreeEMS open source software. The stock Miata CAS has been adapted to fit the FE3 driven on the exhaust cam using part of the FE3’s original distributor drive. The stock coolant temp sensor (rear of the cylinder head) and a GM air temp sensor (cold side intercooler end tank) are used for temps. It uses a circle track crossflow twin core radiator next to a Mercedes diesel 123 oil cooler, backed up by a 2500cfm Spal fan which is set up as a two speed fan using a volvo fan relay assembly. Coolant temp runs the fan at half speed via a trigger from the ecu, while switching on the AC will jump the fan up to full speed. This system has worked well in scenarios including Atlanta summer heat. Air conditioning was built on a stock Mazda Miata late NB/Rx8 AC compressor and bracket. A 95 Miata parallel flow condenser was used, and hoses were built using salvage stock pieces brazed and crimped for fitment. Intake manifold is an aftermarket DSM 4G63 plenum grafted to the stock FE3 intake manifold flange/stubs. I’m using a stock Ford 65mm throttle body with the stock idle valve and tps- a bargain <$20 delivered. Rx7 Turbo II 550cc injectors are fed by a Supra turbo in-tank fuel pump.
