1967 Plymouth Barracuda

Factory 235HP 273CID 4bbl with column shift automatic and bench seat, manual disc brakes, manual steering, HD suspension. My father purchased this car from the original owner in 1977. I took over possession around 1983. It accumulated a few modifications over the years — some good, some bad. It was rear-ended in 2012, leading to a prolonged period off the road as the body shop went bankrupt after the car had been partially dismantled. Finally completed in 2021. Currently presents as stock with the addition of 1970s Mopar Rally wheels and dual exhaust which was not an option with this package in 1967. Suspension mildly upgraded with “big block” torsion bars and front and rear antisway bars. Cylinder heads ported while the body was in the shop. Factory 7-1/4” rear was replaced with an 8-3/4” Sure-Grip (3.23 ratio) sometime in the late 1980s. Strong points: classic fastback styling; extremely stable and predictable high speed handling, demonstrated on the long course at Willow Springs and on numerous vintage rallies; powerful, fade-free brakes; passing power in the 40-90mph range. Shortcomings: the little 273 doesn’t have a lot of low-end punch; brutal understeer on downhill corners; slow steering ratio (5-1/2 turns lock to lock) can’t keep up with curvy mountain roads; lots of muscle needed for steering and braking; fuel mileage (don’t ask).
