Here’s my ‘92 Ford Escort Twin Cam (OK, “GT”). I originally built it with the GR ‘07 Challenge in mind. But I could not get enough time off to make it down (from NJ) and back to the ‘07 event. Maybe ‘08. I figured it would just be a “crap car” for the Challenge and to get my feet wet in NASA, but actually, it’s turned out to be a decent little car. In real terms I have about $700 in it (but the GR “fair market value” would probably double that figure). It began life as my sister-in-law’s daily driver and was then passed on to my 80 year old Dad. Then onto me. It was automatic, but a kind-hearted GR forum member gave me a ratty, but complete, 5-speed Escort GT last year. The free car was in Ohio. So I took a Wednesday off and drove a round-trip of 1050 miles in one day to pick it up. Memorable. The cage came from a wrecked Protege. 13” X 7” steel wheels were free from an exploded ricer. The worst part of building this car was putting in the new brake/clutch pedal assembly (done after the cage was already in). The rest of the 5-speed swap wasn’t too bad. Since mid-‘07 it has run at Pocono (three times), Lime Rock and a Four Hour Twilight Enduro at Summit Point. All told, I have about 15 hours of track time on it and it’s been great. I will run the Escort in another 3 or 4 NASA events this year, if I have the time (I also race an Austin Healey Sprite in about 5 or 6 VRG vintage events each year).
