1989 Merkur XR4RS


Overview: Purchased dead stock with 59k miles and all original for $1200 in 2006. Found it languishing on a neighborhood street, knocked on the door and inquired, and drove it home a couple days later. While it served as my daily driver, I almost immediately started modifying it. It’s gone through a few suspension setups, a couple intercoolers, a couple ecu upgrades, several sets of wheels & tires, etc. I continue to modify and upgraded as needed. Engine: - original 2.3L short block - mildly home-ported head - gutted upper & knife-edged lower intakes - home-ported E6 turbo manifold - stock T3 turbo with .48 Cosworth turbine housing - Cosworth 2wd intercooler w/2.5” piping & Forge style BOV - SVO PE ecu & “big” VAM - custom fenderwell “cold air” intake with K&N cone filter - full 3” exhaust w/ high flow cat and Borla XR1 muffler - typically run 17-20 lbs of boost. Transmission & differential: - stock T9 5 speed transmission & stock replacement clutch (slipping!) - BMW E36 LSD differtial conversion w/3.15 gears Suspension & brakes: - Deflex urethane bushings front & rear - solid mounted rear beam & differential - Spax adjustable struts/shocks & lowering springs - Rapido 28.5mm front & 19mm rear sway bars - OMP front strut brace - JVAB WRC spec front discs (11.3”x1.25” two piece rotors, Wilwood 4x1.62” FBSL calipers) - Rapido rear disc conversion Wheels & tires: - Team Dynamics ProRace IIs, 17x7 with 215/40s - 16x7 ARE 5 stars with 215/40s - 15x7 and 16x7 sets of vintage Enkei 92 mesh rims Exterior: - Cosworth replica arch kit - Cosworth replica RS upper & RS500 lower rear spoilers - Cosworth replica grille - euro glass headlights vcustom custom front bumper conversion Interior: - Leather wrapped wheel, shifter boot, and knob - Sparco pedals - white face “glow” gauges - shortened shifter rod. Performance: - 180whp/220wtq @ 17lbs boost with slipping clutch, prior to head, intakes, turbo, and exhaust upgrades. Testing done with Mustang dyno. Future modifications: - Autometer oil pressure, water temp, boost, AFR, and EGT gauges, Innovate LC1 wideband - World Class T5 conversion - rear strut tower brace/harness bar combo - Raven black interior and vintage Recaro seat conversion - roller cam upgrade - FIA spec roll cage & chassis reinforcement - adjustable TCAs
