Save for a little incident known as the Second World War, the 24 Hours of Le Mans has run every year since 1923. And although there are many endurance races on the calendar, winning the iconic race is a sure way to make ensure car and drivers make it into the history books.

If nothing else, it’s interesting to see the gradual evolution of the race car over the many years the race was held.

As well, which Le Mans winner from this list is your favorite?

Pikes Peak may currently have a fully paved road that reaches the peak, but that wasn’t the case back in 1957. At that time, the only way to the top involved a rough dirt road.

However, Chevrolet wanted to make the challenge of reaching the top of Pikes Peak even harder by having two of its production trucks make the climb without the use of any roads–like, at all.

Video: Did Subaru Really Call Its Own Car Cheap and Ugly?

Normally, a carmaker wouldn’t want to describe its cars as “cheap and ugly,” but that apparently what the marketing team at Subaru decided upon when introducing the 360 to the United States.

Unfortunately, the odd advertising campaign was the least of the 360’s worries, as poor crash test results led to a plummet in sales before it was replaced by the R-2.

Video: The Only Time NASCAR Stock Cars Raced at Le Mans

Thanks to the oil crises of the 1970s, new rules were introduced for the 1976 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans—the most significant being that all cars needed to be capable of at least 7 mpg. A side effect of the rulings was that a number of factory teams pulled out.

In response, officials put out invitations to IMSA and NASCAR teams in the hopes that they could fill in the missing ranks. However, only two teams answered the call.
