Cars have gotten bigger, heavier and more powerful over the last 50 years, but have they gotten thirstier, too? Depends. Since the government didn’t track fuel economy in 1964, we sourced the mpg figures for the older cars from contemporary issues of Road & Track. We pulled the numbers for their modern equivalents from fueleconomy.gov, the U.S. Department of Energy’s handy website.
