This is a unique one to say the least. The customer wanted a fast fun 2002 that would put a huge smile on his face every time he drove it. The car came with a rebuilt m10 but he wanted efi and a turbo...A Nissan S15 SR20det was picked to check those boxes.
So here we go.
Unwrapping with it's new home in the background.
First test fit of the engine and a lot of things are in the way....booster, master cylinder, pedal box, steering box and linkage, etc etc....so things will have to move.
Switching to wilwood hanging pedals.
Steering rack
linkage

Always cook projects from you, Jake! Are you doing this work full time yet?
Nice! Keeping the Nissan 6-speed or the OEM T28?
Did you get a chance to do fully-dressed weight comparisons between the two engines or engine/trans combos? SR20DET + trans is usually quoted at 493 lbs (S13 variant) but more info and weight of the 6-spd would be cool to know. And to see if it might lighten the nose a bit...

Yes full time now

yes keeping 6 speed and OEM t28. I did not weigh it. I should and compare it to the m10. Might end up being about the same . I am sure the trans is a little heavier but that is low so.....

Turbo being mounted up top
Starting to fit the engine with trans (up to now the trans was always off)
Trans mount was pretty simple.
With the steering rack in the control arms had to be remade.
Engine mounts tacked together. Using e28 mounts
(pan will be replaced)
Lots of room for a radiator and fan
I hate how you make these swaps look easy.
If the new owner ever decides to upgrade the turbo, I'll take the OEM T28 off his hands
The GReddy pan for the SR is a nice piece, I've got one on mine. Extra capacity, baffled, cast cooling fins on the exterior. I'm mainly interested in the trans weight difference, but the overall package would be neat for comparison purposes. Does the M10 have an iron block? The S13 SR20DET + 5-speed is usually quoted about 5 lbs lighter than the KA24DE + 5-speed... SR's aluminum block basically cancels out weight of the larger head and turbo.
it just so happens that I'm in the process of learning more about the SR20...
I'm even getting the flowbench prepared as well....

haha thanks!
The thread does make it look a LITTLE easier than it really is. Getting this engine in the car was a bit tricky. It's a lot taller than the m10 so with the trans hooked to the SR it just wasn't going in from above. We ended up pulling the front subframe and lifting the engine from the below and then bolting the subframe back on.
I also had to remake the control arms a couple times. Always one step at a time tho...

I am planning to get one of the bigger pans. This one is bent as you can see.

Continue please...
There will be a little delay in the next update as we are working on other projects as well. Might be a week or two. This car will also be getting an e30 rear end, trailing arms, etc etc Or at least that's the plan.
Cool, it's a nice swap package and they're not that pricey for what they are. I'm surprised rwd SR20 doesn't get more love on this board.
jakeb - Would you PM me? I tried you but received an email failure. TIA
i rolled my eyes when i read the thread title, but when i saw the thread starter i had to give it a look. interesting.

can also email to jake@classicdaily.net
I saw a car with this swap at the last Minnesota Cars & Coffee I attended. It was a really well done swap and the owner was very courteous. I don't have much to offer aside from two photos of it.
Thanks for sharing your build, I always enjoy weird engine swaps.

Really need to keep these threads updated.
Anyway...intercooler bits worked out.
Also seeing as this is going to make a good deal of power and the owner wants to drive it VERY hard the stock 2002 small case diff isn't going to be very happy about that we are working up a solution to install e30 trailing arms, axles and a diff into an 02.
Here are some pics of the process so far.
Build a jig for the 2002 bits.
Setting e30 parts in...
bending some pipe...
connecting the dots

The fab on that rear end is SWEET. The work overall looks great.
Nice to see an update.

The Toyota version (a bit beefier than the Nissan) comes in @ 89.5#s with bell removed and LEEN adapter fitted

I really need to keep these thread updated. Need to get into some sort of routine to update them. Anyway...here is an update.
Custom e30 rear all installed.
A couple pictures of just the e30 rear
All new bearings, bushings, etc went into the rear end before it went in.
Frozen hubs before going together
Engine bay going all black
Welded the internal wastegate flapper
Turbo mounted for the last time
3" downpipe took a little effort...
3" Exhaust
Engine bay getting closer
Engine is all wired, brake system is almost done, driveshaft in, fuel system 95% done. Getting close to running. Will keep things a bit more updated.
